Not sure if it's overrated, but I just don't get most of it.
Actually now I think about it, it's the hype that's overrated, not the song/artist.
I love Hanson.

I don't particularly like U2.
But I don't consider them overrated.
A difference in taste does not directly correlate to being overrated

Massive Pearl Jam fan - but I really can't stand listening to Betterman more than once every two years.

For me:

light years
80's (especially in metal)
70's
60's
50's

Exactly, I think some people have got confused with this topic.
Some bands have songs that were/are massive and very popular but I think they have much better material than that particular song, eg. Hey Jude as TSG just posted, All the Small Things, Satisfaction and Bohemian Rhapsody.
I like those songs and will always sing along to them but I think The Beatles, Blink, Stones and Queen have better songs than those examples.

Spot on, and Daughter too. Rearviewmirror is totally underrated though.

Daughter is better than Betterman, but yes.
Reason I do like daughter is that I believe it's a sequel to RVM.
(I wrote about it on a Pearl Jam mailing list in the late 90s)
Blood is underrated.
