i dont want to put words in PUNKS mouth because he is BIG enough to handle his own fights, but I think that PUNK is trying to say that they have the marketability 100% spot on but they need to work on direction, content and song choice if he is to become more respected as a musician and not just an entertainer.

More respected by who??

The point I am trying to make is you can't really say the marketing is 100% but direction and content, etc is not, as marketing and product go hand in hand. Marketing of any product cannot be 100% if your product is no good as it will not sell. If he or madonna or britney is selling millions of records, and it doesn't really matter who to, then the product, promotion, place, price and management are successful regardless of opinion. If you don't like the product, who cares - don't buy it or watch it.

I understand that all those facets go hand in hand but some can be stronger then others as well.

more respect from those in the industry that can write and sing their own songs.

with Robbie its not about the strength of the songs its the way he interprets them and presents them.

ah, but that is a different market altogether and not one being targeted by the likes of Robbie Williams...unfortunately that market doesn't sell records...

Fair comment, but what I meant was that market "doesn't" always sell records. There are hundreds of artists who have the respect of the industry but don't sell records, but many more artists that don't have the respect and sell shitloads - unforunately respect of the industry has nothing to do with record sales.

They were both examples of marketing being able to sell music that everyone would agree is shit. Sure, they are both gone and forgotten now, but shit does sell. The advantage Robbie has over them two, is marketable sex appeal. The women love him, thats why he's still around. If he got fat, see how long he'd last.
