I have actually seen the Living End live and they are a high energy and entertaining act. However, I would describe Chris Cheney's rockabilly playing style as simple, boring and predictable. He's a one trick pony that tries too hard to be Brian Setzer. I think he uses too much distortion, plays the same old guitar using the same old pickups = same sound. There's not alot of variation in tone, or tempo for that matter. I find his music unoriginal using the same pentanoic blues scale for every solo that any kid can copy and most of his stuff is in the same key...hardly creative. Commercial success? well mediocre would best decirbe it, the Living End are hardly up there with Australia's elite and compared to some of the other associated acts in the top 10 they hardly rate at all.

Now, if we could have your top ten please?

Totally agree with this !!! Won't get an argument from me there...
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

for anyone who has ever picked up a guitar and tried to play some of the Living Ends songs, they are anything but simple. Their songs are very technical. Every solo is based on scales, that's how they work, they aren't just random notes. No variation in tempo?

you don't learn how good a guitarist is my seeing them live, you learn how good they are by studying their technique and their notation

Last saw them at the Big Day Out in 2006. Yeah, he can play and he's a "good" guitarist. 4th ever ....laughable.
Mind you they followed the Beasts of Bourbon and that Spencer P Jones and Charlie Owen can play a bit. ;)

Don't have time to filter thru all these previous posts but if Kevin Borich hasn't been listed then I'll go HE.
Crikey he was rated Oz's best by Rolling Stone 20 or 30 years ago. Well, I think so anyway. Could be wrong, it might not have been Rolling Stone. As for Tommy, well good to listen to but painful to have to watch - with all his schmaltzy smiles and manufatured head wobbling/shaking and gazing adoringly into space moves. Competes with Manilow on that score.
People who bought this book also bought a stool and some rope. Unknown literary critic
