"We're the Pride of South Australia". Mind you, I don't ever hear that song anymore.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?
No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

I would list Good Old Collingwood Forever with this list still not heard after a Grand Final since 1990

Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus.
I mention it because it is the song that almost everyone thinks of when you first say 'country music'.
I am a huge fan of modern Australian country music and, unfortunately, that song pretty much kills the country genre and puts so many off!

I would also nominate 'This is Australia' by Gangajang.
For some strange reason it is played as an 'Aussie Anthem' but was actually written in condemnation of Australia. The boys did not enjoy their time in Australia and wrote this as a result.

Just like I think AC/DC is overplayed - again, because I don't like them.

Seems that everytime I get into the car a bloody ACDC song is on the radio.

No wonder other states think we're feral  ;)

Fully agree completely on Coldplay, but some level of kudos to a band who has released the same song 85 times with slightly different tempo, speed and lyrics, and managed to lure an amaznig number of people into buying their albums each time.

AC/DC are horribly overrated and have been caught in a creative straightjacket for nearly four decades. Still, they've sold millions of records and are great to see live. When you get an Acca Dacca album or go to one of their gigs you know what you are going to get.

As a metalhead all I need is Back in Black and I reckon Dirty Deeds is OK for the best of Bon Scott. Why anyone would need to own more than these two tops is beyond me.

TONIGHT I CELEBRATE MY LOVE (Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack) - played at nearly every wedding I've been to since the 80s.

Another bogan athem "Cocaine" J J Cale - this was a favourite in the 70s on the Pooraka Hotel (now Bridgeway) on the jukebox
The long and winding road - Beatles
Mull of Kintyre - Paul McCartney
Imagine - John Lennon

As someone else said maybe not so much overated but overplayed.

I think 'overrated' can intersect with 'overplayed'. Someone has to rate them to play them all the time in the first place. :-k

Not a song, but a band - this may get knocked down, but I still can't work out the attraction with The Moody Blues.

Funnily enough, I heard this song on the weekend and immediately thought of this old thread, but wasn't sure if anyone had mentioned it. Fortunately, REB had also noted its amazing longevity for such a song. (Don't get me wrong - I like the song and it always reminds me of my first university O-Camp, with a roomload of 40 of us dancing around a room with beers by the dozen to this tune, but it's still horribly overrated)

I was unlucky enough to cop around 40 minutes of this week's Top 30 on Channel V on Saturday night. Two things struck me about it; a) nearly every one of the ten songs I heard sounded virtually the same and b) Rhainna was among them, and has somehow maintained a consistent record of releasing awful stuff all the time that somehow sells truckloads.

For me, the runaway leader still remains Bernard Fanning's "Wish You Well". I like Powderfinger's stuff, but this one leaves me utterly cold. If it was a new artist trying to break into the scene, I don't reckon it would get past the first record company executive. The one bonus of the song is that it remains very easy for buskers to play. This is also its biggest downfall. I've lost count of how many buskers I've heard strumming this one over the years and have strongly considered paying them to stop playing the damn thing. Can't stand it, but somehow, it won the Triple J Hottest 100 one year.

Might get shot down for this one, and despite being a big fan of Hunters And Collectors, I don't reckon "Throw Your Arms Around Me' is even in their best 15 or so songs, much less how often it finds its way into so many "Great Australian Songs" lists.
