I have another blasphemous one .... I wasn't game to post earlier but Goat Herder has inpired me ... I prefer John Farnham's version of "Help" to the Beatles original.

I prefer the "gravitas" (can't think of the right musical word) of the slower version and I think the lyrics are more effective slowed down. It's not so much John Farnham singing as it is the slower pace.

As a broadbrush rule I prefer the Beatles ballads over their faster songs. Had they done "Help" with the same gravitas as say "The Long and Winding Road" and Farnsey had the faster version I'd have said the Beatles version was better.

I'm struggling to think of a song that I get more tired of hearing done by anyone. Each version is basically the same. Heartrending, overwrought, shrieking and sounds like a boulder slowly descending a hill, with that same feeling of doom. Urgh.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

Pretty sure I posted this in the other 'covers' thread, but anyway...
From a poll NME did in 2010:

The best regarded:

1. Muse - 'Feeling Good'
2. The Beatles - 'Twist And Shout'
3. Johnny Cash - 'Hurt'
4. Jimi Hendrix - 'Hey Joe'
5. Nirvana - 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night'
6. The Clash - 'I Fought The Law'
7. Jeff Buckley - 'Hallelujah'
8. Jimi Hendrix - 'All Along The Watchtower'
9. Marvin Gaye - 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'
10. The White Stripes - 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself'

Didn't realise 'Grapevine' was a cover, but Gaye owns it with his outstanding voice.
CCR's 10 minute version is great as well.
I'd prefer to listen to the White Stripes' intense cover of 'Jolene' than Dolly's version.
Nancy Sinatra's cover of Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) was better than Cher's original.
The Raconteurs do a decent rock version as well.

The worst:

1. Britney Spears - 'I Love Rock 'N' Roll'
2. Ronan Keating - 'Fairytale of New York'
3. Celine Dion - 'You Shook Me All Night Long'
4. Take That - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'
5. M People - 'Itchycoo Park'
6. Robbie Williams - 'Song 2'
7. Will Young - 'Light My Fire'
8. Madonna - 'American Pie
9. Limp Bizkit - 'Faith'
10. Mark Ronson - 'No One Knows'

Well at least 1 person liked Madonna's Pie* :)

Could be worse. Farnham's rendition of Long Way To The Top made me want to vomit.
He also made a little bit of me die when he attempted to sing Women In Uniform on Hey Hey once but at least Shirl came in half way through the song and brought some cred to it.

A couple of songs Ive heard done better by local SA bands than their originals are Incarnadine's Zomby and The Irrrsponsible's Confide In Me.

Don't ever recall saying that Rikardo, plus I did add a partial disclaimer to that call (purely the song Sympathy For The Devil.. :P). G'NR weren't worthy of being the fuzz on the almighty kahuna's of the 'Stones. ;)

I agree Hondo, the balladic version of Help is much better than The Beatles upbeat version, it's just the Farnesy stigma attached to it that irks. IMO, The Beatles version lacks emotion and almost sound disinterested and that they can't wait for the song to be over.

One I thought of after I last posted ;

Less Than Jake's version of "(I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles" by The Proclaimers is a belter, especially the lyric, "And when I haver, whatever the **** that means, I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you!"..
