AC-DC are one band that brought in a new lead singer to replace one who died (too young) and kept going successfully. I can't think of many others off the top of my head.

I can't blame the surviving INXS members from wanting to go on. A great body of work that people enjoy and and the potential for a fresh start on a new path with a new singer.

I agree with DW that it doesn't seem to have worked in this case but I can understand why they would not want to stop just because their lead singer died suddenly way too early. I think they could have handled the changeover to a new singer much better than they have and maybe then it could have worked. Perhaps they should have moved on quicker to a permanent new singer like AC-DC did.

Terrance Trent-dárby, Jon Stevens, JD Fortune .... anyone else?

Not a fan at all of INXS in their current form personally but each to their own.

Trying to think of other examples...Queen tried it on with Paul Rodgers. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest & Iron Maiden have had different frontmen who have found success. Faith No More did it. Van Halen had some huge albums with Sammy Hagar. Fleetwood Mac? There are a few now I think of it...

Van Halen was also in my mind but I limited it to when the singer had died. When it's about replacements of living lead singers there's also the Wiggles!

There's enough examples where it has worked so say that INXS could work too.

INXS haven't brought out much new material as I recall which hasn't helped probably. AC-DC just kept rolling on with Brian Johnson. Back in Black was released within 12 month's of Bon Scott's death I think (?).

Interesting discussion.

One further thing I will say is, it must be disconcerting for whoever is leading INXS that whenever the band is advertised on radio/tv the music chosen has Hutchence singing. Not even a 'new' INXS song, let alone a version of an earlier song featuring their voice.

Fair enough, LRB would have fit into that category too...Genesis...Deep Purple...Echo and the Bunnymen...

Joy Division are almost a fit (pardon the pun) in that their singer died but was replaced from within rather than an outsider. I wonder how often that's been done before?

Another interesting thread would be the Carry-On-Regardless type of lead singer who sacks or changes the band but keeps on going under the same name. Mark E Smith from The Fall would be the pin-up boy for this. Billy Corgan? Axl Rose? Martin Phillips from The Chills? Robert Smith?

Yep, Phil Collins replaced Peter Gabriel on lead vocals for Genesis (obviously Gabriel is alive and well).

Other bands to replace singers: Black Sabbath (Ronnie Dio, Ian Gillan for Ozzie, before he came back), Judas Priest (some guy from a JP cover band stepped in before the original front man came back).

Syd Barrett was almost the "living dead" when David Gilmour replaced him on lead guitar and vocals in Pink Floyd.

Mrs redandblack was a big fan and saw all their SA concerts, as well as in Melbourne and Sydney.

Her friend was President of the USA fan club and that gave them huge access backstage.

She's got a big collection of rare and hard-to-get INXS memorabilia.

(I once had dinner with Michael's brother Rhett(?) and others. Weird.

Very cool r&b!

Out of curiosity I had a listen to their 'new' CD (boring MOR geezers like Rob Thomas doing 'interpretations' of reheated 'classics'). Apart from Tricky doing Mediate, it ain't pretty...

Today marks the 14th anniversary of the final day of recording for the "Elegantly Wasted album", which is, of course, their final studio album.

One of Michael Hutchence's final acts of rebellion allegedly occurred during recording this album. The band had presented Oasis with the "Best Album" award at the 1996 Brit Awards, with Noel Gallagher saying on air "Hasbeens shouldn't be presenting albums to 'gonna-bees". Not long after this, Hutchence was drinking with Bono and Liam Gallagher, when Gallagher tried to pick a fight with Hutchence.

Later that night, Michael returned to the studio and told Andrew Farriss that he wanted to re-record some backing vocals for the title track. Months later, when the song was released, many who heard it, heard what sounds awfully like "I'm better than Oasis" underneath the chorus.

Have a listen sometime and see what I mean with it :) . Always makes me smile about a man that I rate as one of the best frontmen ever for an Australian band, and a band that shaped my childhood.

Two significant INXS dates this week.

Marks 26 years since the recording of "Listen Like Thieves"

Tomorrow, August 3, will be the 19th anniversary of the release of "Welcome to Wherever You Are".

18 years since Full Moon, Dirty Hearts was released.

Will be interesting to see how the band goes with another new lead singer - Ciarin Gribbin, from Ireland.

Still wouldn't mind seeing Suze DeMarchi have a go at singing their stuff - although have always thought that, should they want to reform, Skyhooks could do a lot worse than get her on board as lead singer also. A number of band members floated the idea of a female replacement when Shirley Strauchan left the band originally in the 70's.

Women in Uniform would be interesting at least :)

Gold  . One of the wettest times I've ever experienced in such a short time. Went from being warm and dry, to be completely soaked through to the skin in minutes. A long drive home completely drenched, but worth the trip overall.

Some of the INXS songs were...interesting to say the least. The version of "Beautiful Girl" was plain strange - sounded like some sort of opera, and less said about the first version (non encore) of "Dont Change" the better. Also interesting that so much of the first three albums was completely ignored, but they then started with the underrated "Heaven Sent" and also did "Elegantly Wasted". Overall, a good show.

Then again, I was in my element during James Reyne, as my show companion will attest :D . When he was rained out, I was briefly disappointed, until Vanessa Amorosi, yep indeed blew everyone away with a brilliant set.
