LOL so it is. Honestly, can you remember life before the Interweb? With new eps of Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Terminator Chronicles, plus Adelaide United to watch over the weekend, and now the new U2 album to try before I buy, why would anyone fork out for Foxtel or Tivo?

Live sport remains the main drawcard for me -wouldn't get great AFL coverage otherwise or overseas cricket tours.
Don't watch much else on Foxtel except for documentaries -which can be had online as well.

But live sports ARE online, in varying degrees of quality mind you - sometimes blocky, sometimes superb - watched the last Ashes tour for nought. Check http://myp2p.eu/index.php?part=sports for starters. Mind boggling.

First impressions are that it's definitely closest in spirit to the Unforgettable Fire & Achtung Baby experimental side of U2 / Eno. Not a million miles from their Passengers project either. Certainly very little verse-chorus-verse hit single U2. Except for the awful Boots song which is a hit with a silent 's'. It sticks out like a sore thumb - not an indication of the album at all.

Edge has his 80s effects pedals out most of the time for sure. Some naff, lazy lyrics at times (so nothing new there, ha ha!). Lots of Coldplay-wailing where lyrics should be - sounds a bit rushed/unfinished in that respect. Great opening tracks, a few flat spots in the middle but picks up as it goes on. Not sure what those who prefer the 'traditional' Joshua Tree / Can't Leave Behind U2 will think.

So you would rate it as a decent effort, zipper?

I dunno, 3 out of 5 maybe. I've listened to it about 5 times now. It starts off sooo well ( had goosebumps the first time I heard the 2 opening tracks) but then kind of gets a bit, hate to say it, dull.

There's an appallingly-titled song called I'll go Crazy if I don't Go Crazy Tonight which is probably the only other song (along with the Boots song) with a memorable hook and will probably be a single. 2nd track called Magnificent is great - a cross between Even Better than the Real Thing and REMs Orange Crush. Unknown Caller sounds like an Unforgettable Fire B Side which is good. Stand Up Comedy is very ordinary filler. Probably the most Achtung-like track is Fez - sounds great up loud and is very Brian Eno influenced. White as Snow is the epic weepie, quite good but not up there with All I want is You etc. Cedars of Lebanon is another slowie, bit like Ground Beneath Her Feet.

I'm happy to let this one grow for a bit. It's not a radical departure but it's got some interesting moments and for a band of their size and vintage not a bad effort.

Ok, heard it twice.

Can't say I'm overly impressed with it at all. Too me it sounds very disjointed and doesn't seem to follow a theme. It's all over the place. Magnificent stands out for me as a good song. The rest did not grab me at all. Did like some of "The Edge's" guitar work in a few of the tracks.

Some of Bono's vocal work is hideous. Wailing, screams and some singing sounds kind of out of tune.

No commerical stand out tracks at all.

I will have to listen to it a few more times to see where I stand on this one. It will be very interesting to see what reviews this album will get.

This album is certainly not "classic" U2.

So far, 2 stars out of 5..... :?
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

Spot on, he is the album's weak link. His lyrics are cringeworthy these days and he's all over the shop vocally. As we were listening to it the first time I was remarking to Mrs ZZ "Oooh this one sounds good" until Nobo opened his gob, "Hmm, maybe not".

HAHAH....funny that, I was discussing that with Mrs. Southee too!!!

I think the Edge is one of the shinning lights on the album and saves it from being a complete disaster!!!

Could they be turning into the Rolling Stones????

'Moment of Surrender' is my highlight.
I tagrre that Bono's vocals are all over the place, but I don't consider this a bad thing in this case.

Anybody been watching them on Letterman?
Highlight so far was The Edge's ad-lib in last nights top ten.
