In direct answer to the question, Crowded House gets my vote, successfull here and overseas and yet kept an element of australianism in their music right till the end..

and Neil Finn was a Kiwi. What could be more quintessentially Australian than claiming a Kiwi as one of our own?

I was just listening to TISM the other day and one of the better songs off of 'www.tism.wanker.com' was 'The Parable Of Glenn McGrath's Haircut'. Here's the lyrics:

My mate Roger got a girl pregnant when he was fourteen
He was so s__t scared he told me, and when he said that her dad was a cop I thought he was joking
I told him he's got to tell someone, and so he went and told a teacher and the girl eventually got an abortion
He was f__king s__tting himself, let me tell you but six months later he was f__king around as always

Ooh, aahh, Glenn McGrath

"You better watch it" I thought to myself. But Roger was pretty f__king sure of himself
He was the guy who first brought a bag of hash to a party. Because I was his friend
I was there when he first showed it to people and we all went down the backyard and he rolled a joint.
Where did he get it from? My parents would've killed me if they knew.
I thought we'd all turn into junkies or something if we had too much.

The last time I saw Roger was last year at the Boxing Day test. He'd turned into such a fat, normal, yobbo c__t.
"The wife nearly didn't let me out today" he said and he did all that chanting yobs do like "Ooh, Aahh, Glenn McGrath".
"It got you in the end" I thought to myself as I looked at Roger.
"Life got you in the end, pal. You were such a cocky, successful winner when we were 16, but now, you're just another
sad fat prick sitting in the MCG, high-fiving in self congratulation as if it it's you that had the skill and determination
to play for Australia". It's the c__ts with the bad haircuts that you've got to watch out for.
There's never been a popular teenager yet who's done rat's with their life.
It's the f__king dorks that give it a real go. Glenn McGrath got 5 for 50 that day.

Was waiting from someone to name them.

Hmmm, I'll go with Frenzal Rhomb.

I don't get a million bucks for getting out of bed,
I don't get a million f*cks when I punch folks in the head,
And even if we know we never get a billboard top 10 hit,
At least we know Russell Crowe's bands a ******* pile of sh*t.

I don't get olympic athletes to my barbecue,
I don't get extortion threats from the Coffs Harbour saloon,
and even if our pay checks may as well as be counterfeit,
at least we know Russell Crowe's bands a ******* pile of sh*t.

Was browsing in a bookstore this arvo and a new book just released about Australian music and artists (very remiss of me not to note the title  ).

A chapter in there looked at Australian anthems, and songs that best illustrate Australia. Some of the usual suspects in there that have already been covered here - until Shaddup you Face got a run 8) . The thought was that it summed up the larrikinism of Australia at the time.

I used to have time for Midnight Oil, but PG sold out for mine and undermined everything they stood (still possibly stand for).
