Triple J Hottest 100 2005

Yes, music now has its very own forum!

This is sadly one of the most main stream Hottest 100's,sorry,the most main stream Hottest 100 ever.It also shows the limited airplay some of the worlds great acts get on the J's.Bernard Fanning and Ben Lee are with out a doubt quality singer song writers, and Powderfinger would always get a song or two in,but both of these tracks get played as backing music when 891 ABC is introducing the cricket FFS! Hardly a JJJ top 100 number 1 and 2.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

I see Fatty is no longer allowed to take a bottle of wine into the studio with him for his show.

Explains everything really - all these years he's been doing the show pi$$ed!

What happened to the good old days when people would vote for their all-time best songs and the list would be replete with Joy Division, The The and The Cure?

The best thing JJJ ever broadcast was the test transmission just before the station was officially opened in Adelaide. It was a 90-minute loop of songs including stuff like Black Box's "Ride On Time" and Severed Heads' "Big Car". Unfortunately after a week or 2 the station opened and the wanky DJs began beating their gums, thus beginning JJJ's swift ride to the bottom of the heap. Radio made by recent post-pubescents for a mostly pre-pubescent audience. Heck, I'd rather listen to Bob "shut up dickbrain" Francis!

I wish I'd made a recording of that test transmission... I don't suppose anyone else out there did? 8)

No but I remember The Replacements "Alex Chilton" was part of it - great track.

And a Jenny Morris track IIRC

That's called Radio in general - not just JJJ.
Funny though, in the past they've had favourites - I guess it just depends what the favourites are. JJJ have changed, some of it "with the times". Can't expect to listen to the same station for 12 years and like it exactly the same. There's too much dancy/rap/whatever on the radio for me, and even on JJJ. I just choose to ignore it rather than go on about it.

There's always been debatable songs in the Hottest 100s. "Asshole" was a catchy novelty song, hardly a number one though. Pretty Fly for a White Guy.... ummm, please? Number 1?

Sure, if songs get rotation, they are liked - though that's every year. Still up to people to vote for what they want.

When I was doing an ill-fated journalism degree in Qld about 10 years ago I remember doing an article on how JJJ was breaking the ABC charter in its pursuit of profit and ratings. I interviewed Maynard F# Crabbes who had just been sacked in the purge (such a helluva nice guy he did the interview twice when it was revealed my tape recorder batteries went flat!), the head of JJJ at the time (Stuart someone - a total prick) and the manager of the local commercial FM station (B105 I think), Ed Breslin.

Anyway, the cut of my story was that JJJ had indeed sold out. I remember the source of my anger at the time was JJJ playing Crowded House's Pineapple Head on almost incessant repeat. Maynard agreed, Mr JJJ was extremely offended and defensive that I could suggest such a thing and Ed from B105 said he was monitoring JJJ with interest and liked the way it was heading.

You can probably guess where this is heading. A very short time later Ed Breslin was appointed the next station manager of JJJ. The rest is a sad and sorry history.

As a footnote I just found this SMH article with the following quote: "The station, which started in 1975 as Sydney station 2JJ, has always been touted as an oasis of alternative music. But its audience has fluctuated. The dismissal of several well-known presenters in 1990, following the decision to go national, sparked an angry rally in Sydney, but the station soldiered on. It grew its audience in the early '90s by championing key bands such as Nirvana and by 1995 it was seen as both alternative and popular, a clever balancing act.

Some observers believe the current decline began as early as 1996 when the newly appointed network manager, Ed Breslin, started to chase ratings and Triple J began to lose its edge."

JJJ completely lost me when they put Justin Heazlewood - 'The Bedroom Philosopher' - on air every week.

Two words.....

Postby Lunchcutter » Fri Feb 03, 2006 3:49 pm

Detachable Penis by King Missle.....
words to one of the worlds funniest songs.. i first heard this in 1992 on JJJ freakin' hil-hairy-ass!

I woke up this morning with a bad hangover
And my penis was missing again.
This happens all the time.
It's detachable.
[background singing begins: "detachable penis" over and over]
This comes in handy a lot of the time.
I can leave it home, when I think it's gonna get me in trouble,
or I can rent it out, when I don't need it.
But now and then I go to a party, get drunk,
and the next morning I can't for the life of me
remember what I did with it.
First I looked around my apartment, and I couldn't find it.
So I called up the place where the party was,
they hadn't seen it either.
I asked them to check the medicine cabinet
'cause for some reason I leave it there sometimes
But not this time.
So I told them if it pops up to let me know.
I called a few people who were at the party,
but they were no help either.
I was starting to get desperate.
I really don't like being without my penis for too long.
It makes me feel like less of a man,
and I really hate having to sit down every time I take a leak.
After a few hours of searching the house,
and calling everyone I could think of,
I was starting to get very depressed,
so I went to the Kiev, and ate breakfast.
Then, as I walked down Second Avenue towards St. Mark's Place,
where all those people sell used books and other junk on the street,
I saw my penis lying on a blanket
next to a broken toaster oven.
Some guy was selling it.
I had to buy it off him.
He wanted twenty-two bucks, but I talked him down to seventeen.
I took it home, washed it off,
and put it back on. I was happy again. Complete.
People sometimes tell me I should get it permanently attached,
but I don't know.
Even though sometimes it's a pain in the ass,
I like having a detachable penis.
[background voices continue to sing "detachable penis" for
a while, then out]

It's probably just me but when JJJ started getting hooked on novelty songs like Detachable Penis, Asshole, I Wanna Be a Hippy and many more I've not committed to memory they lost a whole lot of credibility and dramatically shifted their audience demographic for better or worse.

I'd argue for worse.
