Gareth Liddiard of the Drones' new solo album - "Strange Tourist". Just him and an acoustic guitar and it's amazing.

Nothing wrong with sampling.
I believe it's actually an artform, fitting a sample to a song cleverly.
And...sampling is no different to doing cover versions of songs and name me a well known rock act that doesn't have at least one cover in its repertoire.

Diggin' in the crates!

The Avalanches' debut (only?) album showcased what you can do with sampling.

However, lazy contemporary producers have made a mockery of it.

Lift a riff from a hit song, add some mediocre vocals and voila!

The Bomb Squad used something crazy like 60-70 samples per track on those early PE albums.

Good luck picking them.

Bring tha noize!

Primevils - Chicken Factory. In a decade (80's) that produced some of Adelaide's finest albums this one is the top of the pile for me.

Pink Floyd never did a cover (although they did make use of many sampled voices, sound effects, etc)

Doing a cover does a least take some talent in the band to play their instruments.
Sampling is just ripping a few elements and putting them in the mix -not much talent required.

You're right, sampling is easy, just as covering a song is.
However, to make it a successful sample, as with a successful cover version, is a different matter altogether.
