Who has the best rock voice??

Postby Half Back Flanker » Mon Jul 02, 2012 9:19 pm

Who has the best rock voice?? After receiving a DVD of Queen and Paul Rodgers, I would have to say Paul Rodgers, of Free and Bad Company fame, has the best rock voice of all time. The guy would have to be pushing 60 and still sounds brilliant. Would love to hear others opinions?

In terms of versatility it's obviously Mike Patton but for general straight ahead radio rock Scott Weiland.

Mike Patton has amazing vocal range. Having seen Chris Cornell solo last year and twice with Soundgarden this year I really rate his voice. John Bush of Armoured Saint/Anthrax fame is another, it's no wonder Metallica pushed so hard to get him 30 years ago. Big fan of what James Hetfield's voice has become in recent years, epsecially on Death Magnetic. Bruce Dickinson has a distinctive voice that suits Maidens music well.

On a more local level, Ian Kenny from Birds of Tokyo impressed me when I saw them live. I've always had a soft spot for Sarah McLeod. Phil Jamieson from Grinspoon, Pinky Beecroft from Machine Gun Fellatio and Ron Hitler-Barassi from TISM are right up on my list. As something slightly different, I'm a big fan of Patience Hodgson from The Grates.

Dio, Plant, Hetfield.

Very much personal taste these music based discussions. Can't wait to find out a new name or two when LL comes in with his list. ;)

Chris Cornell
Eddie Vedder
James Hetfield

Would've had Hetfield number one, but his voice has blown out recently.
Sounds terrible now.

J Mascis is the laziest rock voice.

Diesel had a great rock voice during the Injectors days.

Cornell, Patton and Bush as mentioned, Jerry Cantrell has an underrated voice too. Nathan Gray from Boysetsfire.

Always rate blokes who can growl and sing, like Howard Jones (now ex-Killswitch engage)
