Songs that always make you happy....or sad

Postby CK » Wed Oct 20, 2010 7:10 pm

The Embarrassing Artists thread got me thinking, after I was a bit reluctant to admit that I have "Groove Is In The Heart" on my MP3   , and realising that many people actually really like this song and it puts them in a good mood.

I find a number of songs always put me in a happy mood when hearing them (despite what their subject matter may be), such as "To Her Door" (Paul Kelly), "Don't Stop (Fleetwood Mac) , "Run To Paradise" (Choirboys) and most of Australian Crawl's music (always makes me feel like its a warm summer day, driving down the Esplanade, with the sun twinkling off the sea).

On the other hand, some songs seem to bring about the opposite. I'm not sure why, but Men At Work's "Overkill" always saddens me, and the same for Hootie And The Blowfish "Let Her Cry" (being aware of the subject matter).

What songs send you to both ends of the spectrum?

When I am in a "reflective" or even a "down" mood, I love listening to the whole "Singles" Soundtrack. 90's grunge at it's absolute best.

"Smile" by Lily Allen makes me laugh, yet "Shiny Happy People" by REM makes me want to punch people in the face.

Years ago, when I was in a not so happy place,Steve Winwood showed me a little light at the end of the tunnel---

"I'll be back in the high life again,
all the doors I closed one time will open up again.
And I'll be back in the high life again,
all the eyes that watched me once will smile and take me in."

Great mood -
All The Small Things: Blink 182
Boys Of Summer: Don Henley
I Want It All - Queen

Sad mood -

Magpiespower, agreed - "Bright Eyes" was the first song that made me cry when it was first released (I WAS six years old)

Tears In Heaven (I know, but....)

Hurt - Johnny Cash (this is one of the finest, and I mean this absolutely as a compliment - watch it if you haven't seen the video on Youtube to see what I mean - examples of a song that can bring tears to your eyes. A lovely, yet haunting example of Cash at his finest, covering the Nine Inch Nails song, in one of his final videos.

This is one of my favourite tunes, very underated IMO (esp the brilliant sax solo), makes me feel a bit sad as it was around the time this tune came out I split from a a fairly long term relationship, being a teenager at the time I though it was the end of the world!

Agreed, it's an awesome song Dutchy, probably my favourite Icehouse track. As mentioned in a previous thread I do like Icehouse but they can tend to be cold and emotionless (much like Bowie who Iva Davies seems to have morphed into at various stages of his career), which is actually the opposite of this track. My favourite lineup too, with a young Guy Pratt on bass. The Whitlams do an OK job of this too.

Back on topic, The Beatles' 'A Day in the Life' makes me happy and sad at the same time.

Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye. This song makes me feel happy and sad all at once. It reminds me of a dearly departed from my life and the sorrow that goes with losing someone close, but also makes me feel happy that I had the opportunity to feel as close to that person as I did and share the goods times we did.

Songs that make me happy might not be happy songs, but more than likely I have fond memories of seeing it played live or a time in my life when I was super happy or content with my lot in life.

Happy :
Grinspoon - DC3X
Living End - Uncle Harry
Metallica - Hero of the Day
Van Halen - Jump
Powderfinger - Sunsets
59 Times the Pain - Got it all in sight
Rancid - Ruby Soho
Greenday - American Idiot, Time of my life.

Sad :
Anything by REM, Smashing Pumpkins, Massive Attack etc etc.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.
