ARIA Single of The Year

Postby CK » Sat Oct 25, 2008 9:59 am

Thought this one may start a healthy debate. Mentioned before about how I thought The Church's "Under The Milky Way" would be a reasonable choice for best winner of ARIA "Single Of The Year", but its a pretty fair list over the years. Considering the calibre of some of the nominees that didn't win (eg. 2000: Madison Avenue wins for "Don't Call Me Baby", beating among others, 28 Days "Rip It Up"), thought its worth throwing out there - what do people think was both the BEST of all time and unluckiest not to win.

List attached in link (all nominees only listed from 1992 onwards)

Out of that lot i'd go for "Under the Milky way" as well, followed closely by "Treaty". Funny thing is "Under the Milky way" isn't even my favourite single from Starfish. It's "Reptile".

I'm nowhere near the musical expert of the esteemed LL or others on this side

However, I know most of these songs so I'll give it my best shot ...

For best of all time I have to admit I can't go bast Farnesy with "You're the Voice" ... as cheesy as it seems these days.

For unluckiest I think CK picked it with anybody that lost to Madison Avenue. Apart from that year, I reckon the John Butler Trio were unlucky to lose to Jet in 2004. Even though "Are you going to be my girl" was very popular, I felt the lads were slightly over-rated.

I guess it all comes down to personal taste.

No Aphrodisiac was the JJJ no.1 for it's year wasn't it? If so it was probably a bit stiff.

Personally I'd have a Wiggles song in there before Madison Avenue in 2000, just one of those songs that was always like fingernails down the blackboard.

Songs I preferred over the winner include:

From The Sea
Into My Arms
Early Warning
The Horses

Even though it's a song that doesn't do much for me these days, I would have thought Silverchairs "tomorrow" would stake a claim from that list.

Without meaning to bump the thread, Triple M have started playing "Tomorrow" more of late. Surprised at how well it has stood the test of time - 15 years since release - been guilty of having that one on way too loud up Main South Road and getting stares from other drivers as I join in  :)

Treaty is possibly the crappest song in the history of crap songs IMO.
