Adelaide's Contribution to breaking new music

Postby CK » Mon Aug 24, 2009 3:31 pm

Was thinking that, in the 80's and 90's, a number of breaking acts got their beginning to Australian and in some cases, world chart success, here in Adelaide. Melissa Etheridge has often credited Adelaide for breaking her into the scene, for being the first city in the world in which she had a number one single with "Bring Me Some Water", while Tone Loc's "Wild Thing" charted in Adelaide before any other Australian capital and was still climbing overseas after it peaked here.

To a lesser extent, former Warumpi Band member Neil Murray had his first chart success when "Calm and Crystal Clear" broke through to number 13 on the Adelaide charts.

Obviously there are the acts who started in Adelaide, such as Cold Chisel, Little River Band etc, but what other acts could credit Adelaide for helping them in getting their big break?

From memory Dire Straits' first single album went number one here before the rest of the world caught on. We'd be talking probably 1978.

True. It debuted at number one here in Adelaide and was starting to get national airplay before a complaint was made in Tasmania to the Attorney General and it was taken off air in all states except South Australia.

Southee - I remember the Culture Club appearance well, at the top of the old escalators near the Renaissance Tower. Boy George said they had never appeared before such a crowd ever before.
