Gothic & Punk together? Like Nuts & Gum! (The Simpsons- In reply to the fact that Homer is a White Middle Class Male, aged 18-39, everyone listens to him- he supports this by producing a snack pack that says "Nuts & Gum together at last!") Get some proper punk in ya Sam! Start off with The Clash (Punk in style & ethos), Rancid (although many will debate this), Dead Kennedys ("True" Punk- anti establishment), Misfits (Punk because they didn't fit any other category), Germs (Darby Crash say no more) & of course GG Allin (similar to Darby Crash). Goth music is crap. Many late nights at the Proscenium (RIP) confirmed this for me. Some songs you can start with Sam.... Rancid- Time Bomb, Maxwell Murder, Disgruntled, Corruption, Black Lung. Misfits- All Hell Breaks Loose, Die, Die My Darling, Death Comes Ripping, Bullett, Horror Business. Dead Kennedys- Chemical Warfare, actually, grab the In God We Trust, Inc./Plastic Surgery Disasters cd. GG Allin- God Of Fire In Hell, I Wanna F**k Your Brains Out (both off "EMF"- it stands for Eat My F***....). Perhaps Leaping Lindner could also help to steer you in wise directions...

The Aussie Idol singles get SO MANY copies sent to stores, it's impossible for them not to push the "award" (if you can call it that) for the highest selling singles.

Bingo. It's called buying a Number 1 record. Ever wonder why artists debut at #1? It's not coz people have flown to the Record Companies HQ, and lined up to buy it. Every now & then, an artist without record company support will push there way into the charts, on strength of sales. However, this doesn't guarentee radio airplay, as these spots are reserve for? You guessed it- the songs deemed to be "popular" by the record companies. These "popular" songs just happened to be theirs also.
PS Hilltop Hoods are an example of music being too good to ignore. Be interesting to see whether these guys can step up to the next level (ie now they have backing, support & probably a few $'s)

Sam- don't confuse the middle class kids walking around in black clothing, Good Charlotte/Simple Plan/Dickies etc with dyed black hair & 4 grands worth of ink on their arm (all paid for by their parents) as Punk. There would only be 10-20 (I'm probably being generous too) Punks in Adelaide. Melbourne has a decent Punk scene, Adelaide doesn't. Even then, the real Punk ethos has long been lost, nowadays it's all about controlled chaos. Let's face it- you can't break down barriers if the previous generation did it for you?
PS At least there's no "drive-bys" in Punk!

They flirt with Punk. However, they still have great music! Musically, they're better than Operation Ivy

All this talk of drive-by's reminds of an early COMPTON'S MOST WANTED album, which was called, coincidentally...

'Music to Drive-By.'

Get some proper punk in ya Sam! Start off with...

Chuck in The Saints, Buzzcocks and The Jam for good measure.

Bingo. It's called buying a Number 1 record.

It's why record companies LOSE money an acts like Human Nature.

Some 45s from when I was 9-12 (mid 70's):

Sorrow - David Bowie
Make Me Smile - Steve Harley & the Cockney Rebel
Ballroom Blitz - Sweet
Knockin on Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan
The Air That I Breathe - The Hollies
Mind Games - John Lennon
Live and Let Die - Wings
Down Down - Status Quo
Evie - Stevie Wright
Jailbreak - AC/DC

There were probably a few dud besides, but I think most of these stand up over time. A bit of parental discretion on what crud kids buy goes a long way.

These aren't to shabby Mac. I ended up with

Girls Talk - Dave Edmunds
Heart of Glass - Blondie
I was made for lovin you - Kiss
Another Brick in the Wall - Pink Floyd
No Secrets - Angels
Hold the line - Toto
Cruel to be kind - Nick Lowe
My Sharona - The Knack
Generals and Majors - XTC
Crazy little thing called love - Queen
Message in a bottle - The Police
Watching the detectives - Elvis Costello

about five years later.

REB

Going to see them tonight at the Corner. Can't wait I've missed them the last couple of times they've been in Melbourne. Apparently Marty Wilson Piper is on guitar which will be interesting.

I was addicted to these two songs as a 14 year old.

Rockpile was a great band too.
