The Misfits Review

Now, I do understand that I'm alone here, in my adoration of one of the greatest underground bands of the 70's/80's, but your getting a concert review anyway.
Prior to leaving- ill
Flight over- ill
1st night in apartment- ill
Sun morn- catch up with LL/ill
Confined to apartment- ill
Mon- ill-visit Melbourne Aquarium-ill
Mon Night- ill-go watch band-ill
Flight home- ill

Now, I wasn't in a very good mood for the show. For one, I was sober, & watching the support bands was like watching paint dry (nothing against the support bands, I was just ill & wanted to see my heroes & go home).

Finally, when the band I'd dreamt of seeing for 16 years came on stage, my illnes precluded me from being too excited- I just absorbed the occassion. They got into their 1st song & I was patiently watching, & after a few songs thought "this guy can't sing"- now before the sledging starts, the guy singing was never the original singer- the bass player had taken over singing duties, & I thought wasn't quite up to it. Ironically. when he tried to sing he was good, but he was switching between growling/singing, much to his detriment.

There was a point in the proceedings where I thought "this is quite sad, legends reduced to this". However, there were times when I just enjoyed the fact I was seeing these guys play (note Bass player original member, drummer played on a few albums, guitarist was Des from Black Flag- the line-up was nothing like the original). It was obvious how much passion Jerry has for the band, and you could see he was genuinely excited to be putting on a show- this alone made it worth the trip over (hint to a few other rock-stars out there..)

It was brought to peoples attention that Black Flag had never toured Australia, & as Des (guitar) & Robo (drums) were members, they belted out "6-pack" (much to the crowds delight), & they did a Dead Kennedys cover (I'm sure that's what they said, but I had ear plugs in).

They played a good range of songs, covering their older & newer stuff. A shadow of their original selve(s), but a true fan couldn't miss this opportunity...

Weren't we lucky!!!! :P

I have to say having witnessed your state of health first hand on Sunday Morning I am amazed that you left the hotel at all let alone got to the gig and managed other "tourist things" in Melbourne like visiting the aquarium.
I hoped the Corner wasn't too packed for you it's ****ing awful in that joint when it's packed.

Granted, the stuff they put out between 77-84 was gold, but I also did like what they released in 97-99. They have released some 50's covers, but I wash my hands of that. They played an interesting set- songs I expected to hear were absent (All Hell Breaks Loose), while they pleasantly surprised me with a few (Hollywood Babylon). I'm not pro-Danzig, he's far too up himself, but I could see the sun setting with the Famous Monsters album- hey they could change that by releasing a kick ass album, but I think that's the way they'll finish.
