I have a theory about umpires. The balder they are, the more they want to control the game. It seems that for umpires, losing your hair makes you very bitter and angry and then you want to spoil everyone's fun. I know this sounds like rubbish but it is the truth. Have a gander at the umpires this weekend and you'll soon start to see a pattern.

A bald umpire cost Aldinga a win against Port Noarlunga in 2008.

Wow - 2008....
Imagine how many haircuts an umpire could have had since then!

Ashley Baxter was yellow carded after the siren for celebrating to hard after the win on saturday, anyone who has seen his goal celebrations will know that the boy knows how to celebrate. Post match was not any where near the level of his goal celebrations.

tough topic, i wouldn't think any umpires are either end of the scale, good umpires as stated will let the game go. A bad umpire is in the eyes of the beholder, so there will always be a opposing team which would think the same umpire is good at any given game...

Thank god for paul crate in yestredays c grade game at christies beach. He is a fantastic umpire, same cant be said for his partner in crime yesterday. Mistakes happen and thats footy, but not knowing the rules and obvious lack of concentration for a final is not acceptable.
Paid a 50m against a brighton player standing the mark for going over the mark AFTER calling play on.
Recalled a point kickout for MV because the goal umpire hadnt waved his flags?????
Wasted 30-45 seconds prior to a centre bounce because he decided it would be a good time to pull out a hanky and blow his nose, bearing in mind it was a final and there is no time on in c grade.
I could go on and on. His influence had no bearing on the result whatsoever as brighton were way too good, but one day he will influence the result of a big game, so if anyone listens, this guy should not be doing finals football.

Due to being overweight, unfit and basically a very ordinary footballer, I no longer play the game and therefore have no idea as to who are the good and bad umpires. What I will say is it is good to see the 2 'older' blokes mentioned are giving back to the game as I'm sure it must be hard to find umpires in country footy .... (I use 'country' even though it could be argued SFL is more of a suburban comp). I remember watching Ziersch play for the Flat many years ago and Hoover at Kangy. Both very good footballers. I wonder what the current crop of players in footy leagues around the state will do when they retire? So many guys seem to jump from club to club chasing the $$, will any of them pick up a whistle and give back to the game?

Too often we (myself included) complain about umpires but i thought the umpires we had saturday were first class. Let the game flow, called the obvious frees and didn't try to be the centre of attention. One was Godfrey and im not sure on the other but id love to see this pair get the GF. Well done guys good umpires seem to be harder than ever to come by!

Paul Crate in the B's a few weeks ago was outstanding also and i actually told him he should be umpiring A's but unfortunately for the SFL he prefers to watch the his son at the Panthers.

Cratey did the Christies/Flaggies B grade game on Saturday, and I reckon he did a great job.
