U14's

I am new to the SFL this season. Now that we are 1/2 way through the season, thought I would make a comment on the competition I have witnessed to date. Those teams playing in the Saturday competition, with only a Saturday side, that get thrashed week in and week out, would be better off playing on Sunday's, to make for a better competition for both players and supporters.
Does anyone else agree with me or have any comments.

Well you have a good point but i beleive Brighton sunday team is much stronger than their saturday side as it is comprised of all their college kids. whatever you do the competition is never gonna be equal!

Disagree Pig Hunter,
Our 14 side is made up of 1st year 14s and has been more than competative this year.
Also the concept of 5 sides on a Sat should never be tampered with as I believe it to be the strength of our comp.

Its a good point Pig Hunter and for those clubs who can't field a full compliment of juniors it could be a better option if they can squeeze together an Under 14 or Under 16 team. Our Sunday Under 14 teams since the inception of the comp have been quite talented but still woudn't challenge the top 4 or 5 Saturday Under 14 teams.
Pig Hunters idea would not necessarily affect the 5 games per day on Saturday if its those clubs not fielding a full set of juniors anyway. Brighton is a bit cyclical with our Sacred Heart lads. We have some really good Year 6 and 7 lads who will be able to play Saturday footy when Under 14 so we hope to be stronger in the Saturday comp in coming years. It may also make it easier for C grade games to be played on Saturday as per our clubs proposal.

think youll find every team has very few 2nd year 14s due to their birthdays. we have 5 2nd year 14s and will be about the same next year if we keep the same crop. depends when they are born but alot of kids do 5 or 6 terms of reception so when playing 6/7s they are a bit older than the rest but get 1 year 14s

Assert I think you will find that due to the stupid situation of having a 1st of January birth date cut off for all junior football for U14 upwards and having 6/7 football instead of age group (u12) football is causing the problem. As it stands you have 13 year old boys playing 6/7 footy against 11 year old boys because they are in year 7 and turn 13 during the season. This is the reason clubs except valleys are struggling for numbers this year. When and if he SFL come kicking and screaming into the modern world away from the 1960's you will see this problem eliminated and kids will get 2 years at 14 level etc.

PH what league did you come from prior to this season? The strength of the SFL is the whole of club enviroment encouraged and maintained by having juniors and seniors playing on the same day at the same venue (most of the time) I have heard kids and parents comment that when playing Sundays they feel dis associated with club footy. At Cove we have in fact picked up in the last couple of years kids from the SAAFL/Metro South comp. because of our whole of club enviroment. Saturday for example all teams are back at the club for presentations. So what you are in effect saying is lets create 2 divisions and I see supported by DTH, who noramlly mocks such suggestions
DTH

Maybe DTH we can have div 1 and 2 in the seniors and this will also allow these clubs to play in an even comp. I see you also managed to wheel out the old BDOS chestnut Saturday 'C' grade. They do that in the SAAFL if you would like to return??

Hey Vics, isn't the current C grade comp disassociating from the rest of the club as well. I could call you a hypocrite but I won't. The disassociation for those players and parents you refer to would be based on the majority of the club playing on the Saturday. So your presenting opposite arguments. You miss the point with 2 divs. Why shouldn't Hackham, Morphy Park, Lonsdale or Aldinga have a choice where they play their under 14 or 16's if it means being more competitive rather than get pumped most Saturday mornings and go home before the seniors play anyway. Some of these clubs may have a better chance of fielding junior teams on a Sunday as a continuation of their Minis. These clubs haven't had the 5 game Saturday club spirit thing for years so they have to have a vehicle to start somewhere. I think you will find that Morphy Parks were going to be allowed to field their juniors in the Sunday comp if they were able to come up with the numbers. We are only talking of an option for 3 or 4 clubs and not enough to justify your 2 division argument and completely alienate the juniors at clubs who have solid juniors but currently struggling a bit at seniors.

Numbers may force some of these clubs to nominate for Sunday as well. With the potential move to under 12s rather than 6/7s next year there will be a number of year 7 kids who play Saturday school football but have to play under 14s for their club. If these kids are the difference between having an under 14s or not then Sunday under 14s may be the only option.

i think we just said the same thing. everyone is in the same boat due to age when they start playing in age groups rather than year of school. cut off is jan 1st matteg so if your born in 95 you go up 96 you get another year. surely it will need to line up eventually but at school level they wantto play with their mates who are in the same year as them

Fellow footy Lovers,2/3 4/5 6/7 school footy should be under 8 under10 and under12 so that each child gets 2 years in each age to ease them into each group fair and equal. Not that hard? Under 14s is the turning point for kids to play on. Some kids have to have two years in 14s from school footy to prepare for under 16s. Big jump for some small jump for others.

There will be a vote at the next senior delegates meeting to decide this.

They will certainly be in with a strong chance consisently winning against strong opposition.
It will be very tough to get past the Valley lads though who are currently riding on the top. I saw them a couple of weeks back thrashing Morphett Vale. They play with outstanding system teaming together at times like clockwork.

I would say that they have been gifted a draw like Edwardstown BP.
The junior draw is a bit of a hit and miss affair depending on the senior draw. The next three weeks will be the tester for Flaggie 14/16.
Have seen the Flaggie 18 a few times this year they are a class outfit.
Valley's are the side to beat. Very committed, very focused a super outfit for thier age group.
Reynella on there day and Morphies just running into form.
What it does show is the strength of the SFL the 14/16/18 comp is a very good one. Hopefully you guys come on board sooner rather than later.

Yes Big Puss i have seen them play and they in my opinion are ordinary under pressure i have seen them play twice this year against Noarlunga were they only just scraped over the line by 4pts from memory. And the other against our u/14s Hallett Cove were we beat them buy 5pts. Although the scores in the paper glorify them immensely. I believe they can be beaten if caught on a bad day. But on the other hand i have heard Flagstaff Hill are the side to be careful of. So we will wait and see my prediction Cove and Flagstaff Grand final.

VS you stop pretending to be what you are not. You should stick to escorting cash or putting the blinds up and coaching Valleys and stop trying to play usless mind games after all it is only junior footy.
Make sure you show the boys at training the prediction to fire them up.
