Mt Lofty defeated Reynella and Edwardstown defeated Happy Valley in the late game.

Only trials and its only February but they are some surprising resluts IMO.Maybe the Towns result not so much but definatly wouldn't have expected Mt.Lofty to beat Reynella.

I'd expect Towns to beat Valleys not I think of it,they probably will be a top 5 Div 2 SAAFL side.Still the Reynella result came as a shock.

No real surprise to see Mt Lofty beat Reynella, they are a very strong club as a whole, have been dominating the hills leage for the past few seasons...

I am involved with a club in the SAAFL but live down south and I saw some of the 20/20 matches last year and thoroughly enjoyed the games.

I went to the first night this year and was disappointed that the power blackout cancelled the games. I eagerly went along on friday night to watch the games and was impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm from all four sides.

The first match was between Mt Lofty and Reynella and it was a very entertaining match. Not having seen Mt Lofty play before and only seeing Reynella play in the 20/20 last year I didn't know who would be the dominant team.

The conditions were like you'd expect in early April/May, cold and a strong breeze favouring the northern end. As I said not knowing the teams I couldn't say whether either side was resting name players although I think Ben Moore played for Reynella.

Mt Lofty from the start used the ball well and continually attacked into their forward line with plenty of handball and run on players linking up. Mt Lofty won the ruck taps and their disposal was more accurate than Reynella.

Reynella took longer to settle but once they got used to playing footy again they kept plugging away and took the game up to Mt Lofty. Not sure of the final score with Mt Lofty winning by a small margin (less than a goal I think?). Mt Lofty looked the more classy and fitter side but as I said not knowing either of the sides I don't know who was rested and who wasn't. Also whther either coach was experimenting with players in different positions.

The Edwardstown/Happy Valley game was a hard fought match right up until 10 minutes into the second half when Edwardstown took control and ended up winning comfortably. The Edwardstown forward setup was a lot more functional and if not for missing quite a few easy shots at goal in the second half would have won by more. Compared to watching Edwardstown in last years 20/20 I thought the they looked a lot more fitter and have recruited some quality players. Again not knowing the two sides I wouldn't know whether name players were rested or not although I did see Golding watching on the sideline with the Edwardstown hierachy.

These are only my thoughts on the games somebody else may have seen it different. I think the 20/20 concept is terrific for early preseason trials and well worth watching.

agree AFLflyer it will be around for a long time. Not sure if the crowd was as big as the previous friday but it was still a large turnout, the weather may have detered some from going.

I think all clubs who played on friday night would agree that it is a great way to start a preseason and a lot more clubs will want to participate.

how did u go Friday night HS? Get a bit of the rock?

The end result is not as important as getting the system of play right and working out how each other plays etc. Were the Valleys happy even tho they were beaten HS?

thanks HS

Edwardstown looked better than they did last year and yes pity the game blew out. I suppose this is the benefit for coaches from playing these games looking at team structure, trying out juniors, experimenting players in different positions etc.

But as I said I enjoyed watching the games and I woyuld think the players enjoyed it as well.

Happy Valley went in with the lads who are young and new to the club and edwardstown are a good side. So all in alll we were happy enough but the Vikings like every team play to win. perhaps we will be a different side come this friday. But no excuses we were definatley shown up in the last 10 mins! :(

Where abouts did Reynella finish last year? I played in the game against them on fri night and was expecting to get beaten to be honest, as were a few of the lads due to a somewhat diminshed side at the moment in comparison to our premiership side of last year. Should have a few back this friday though fingers crossed. Very interested to see how we go against Happy Vallley and Edwardstown now.

Reynella ended up finishing 3rd last year after 2nd the two years before that. I think you'll find Reynella would have been a bit below full strength as well.

I was certainly surprised Mt lofty won. Well under full strength and rotating players off the bench, but still played exceptional football. I think they will manage to cover the losses of some key players. Reynella not sure how far they were off full strength but one thing is for sure the bald full forward was a gun.
