Does the season usually start before or after easter?

This year the season started 29th march. 2015 Easter Friday 3/4/2015 I would guess yes but DTH would answer this best

The AFL have moved their Grand Final to the 3rd October this year to cater for a later start due to the Cricket World Cup being hosted in Australia/New Zealand.

Normally our Grand Final is held the week before this, so we now become the last Saturday in September.

The SA Community Football League have mandated that we must have no games programmed on the 4th/5th July so that they can have a piss-up whilst some of our players run around aimlessly in a meaningless lightning carnival.

Easter falls on the weekend of Saturday the 4th April so our round 1 would be the last weekend of March again (Saturday 28th). This is because we currently have a 20 week season so that everyone plays 18 games and has two byes.

Hopefully round 1 will be a split round again as the 28th of March is when the SACA (Christies Beach), Adelaide Turf (Brighton, Marion, Reynella), Great Southern (Aldinga, Noarlunga) hold their cricket Grand Finals so those grounds are potentially unavailable. Adelaide & Suburban (Cove, Morphettville Park, Edwardstown, Lonsdale, Hackham, Morphett Vale, Port Noarlunga) & Hills (Flagstaff Hill, Happy Valley) have their GFs on the weekend of 21 March so those grounds should be available.

Most leagues around the state play their seasons over 18 weeks, we cannot achieve this unless we change to an even amount of teams (getting rid of the byes) or drop down to a 16 week season per side.

Had the AFL GF been programmed for the last Saturday in September, we would have had to either play through the June Long-weekend (getting rid of the association game), Easter, or started in the middle of March when most grounds could be unavailable.

The logical solution would be to drop to 16 games each to give an extra couple of weeks that can allow all clubs to start after Easter and allow proper hand-overs of our ovals. We would still get an even number of home and away games and we would also reduce running expenses by 11%. I am not sure any of us want to playing games over Easter and starting earlier is almost impossible.

When we eventually attract another team, or get rid of a team, we can go back to an 18 game season.

In addition to this, in 2016 it is assumed that the AFL will return their GF to the last Saturday of September (24th). If we retain a 20 week season, that will push our Round 1 back to 19th March!!! Alternatively we could play our GF on AFL GF weekend

Good post LGIL. A good friend of mine has advocated for a 16 game season for a few years now. As he constantly reminds people, we are the only league/comp in SA that has an odd number of teams (meaning a BYE each week) that plays an 18 game season which takes 20 weekends to achieve. The SFL may have dodged a bullet for the 2015 season with the later AFL Grand Final but I am also curious when the SANFL GF will be played. If they stick to the same weekend as this year, then the SFL GF could be played a week after the SANFL GF which would seem ludicrous. But what if our GF was the same weekend as the SANFL GF as it was this year. If Port and the Crows were no chance of making finals a few weeks out from the AFL finals, how do we know that the SANFL won't play switch their finals or at least the GF to a Saturday. The SANFL and SACFL wouldn't want one of its affiliate leagues clashing and neither would our clubs.

It is my understanding that the SFL will be presenting 3 or 4 fixture options at the AGM with 1 or 2 of them based on a 16 game season. The only workable 18 game options will be playing the catch up round the week before Easter and then the remaining 19 weeks can be played commencing the week after Easter with no games on June long weekend and July Country Champs and the GF on the last Saturday in September. The other option is similar to 2013 and that is having the catch up round on the July Country Champs weeks and beg the SACFL for this compromise.

But we are pushing the issue under the rug for one more year only by chance because of a later AFL season. I think we need to bite the bullet and drop back to 16 games whilst we remain a 15 team comp and do it now. I believe the SFL fixture guru can use one of the 2 double up rounds as a rivalry round so that the clubs who want to play twice can still do so.

If we play a 16 game season we could still commence the week after Easter, have the week in June and the week in July off and have the GF played on the same weekend as we do now. The catch up round only becomes a one game situation but rather than have a stand alone game, we could possibly have a split round to cover this. This will mean players getting a week or 2 off more during the season but with injury tolls at our level these days, that is not such a bad thing. This also gives a bit more flexibility with the junior fixture because junior games can still be played when your seniors aren't playing and this could help avoid some of the issues we currently have with playing the same team twice in a row or having juniors scattered away from your seniors etc.

Anyway, these are my views and I think clubs need to go to the AGM with some clear thoughts on this because a decision made at the AGM rather than the old - take it back to your clubs - is desirable. We already have blokes at our club wanting to know when our BYE's are so they can plan trips away etc. They normally know straight after the AGM and it would be good for things to be no different come the end of this years AGM.

Can I ask are the teams seeded when sfl plans the fixtures?

Say in round 1 do top 8 teams play each other?

Or maybe if top teams playing last years bottom team, does the bottom team get the home ground advantage?

And normally IF there was 18 rounds, do the remaining to rounds get seeded having top sides play only each other etc etc

With a vast difference in quality between the bottom and top sides, are there any considerations such as these put in place, to close the gap for the strugglers at the bottom, and keep them away from the invincible opponents as much as possible?

Yes Marbles, the fixture has been seeded for several years. With an 18 game season you only play 4 teams twice and the bottom 4 from the year before play each other twice the following year and one other twice from teams ranked 7 to 11. The reverse applies for the top teams.

It was either the coach or the players that were going to go. Club chose the coach over the players, and will now have to start again and spend the dollars and just hope the new players don't end up hating the coach too!
