Mellowing with age - dont drink much either anymore.
Footy has changed since i started - it is no longer accepted testing the young blokes out with the rough stuff and unfortunately teams dont seem to look after their younger blokes as well anymore.
I was once a young player and had to go all the way to Kersbrook to get belted.

Absolutely, a 17 year old for the shoes didn't have a worry elbowing a 30 year old Lions player that was on the ground. If you play Seniors you play by their rules. But behind the play stuff is wrong no matter what age.

who was the 17 year old shoeboy you mentioned i didnt see that happen but then again if it didnt happen at the bar there's a fair chance i missed it[/quote]

If you knew the kid then you'd know he is as hard as and that every week blokes have tried to rough him up. But age or not he still was younger, less expeirenced, smaller build and just doing his job niggling like most backman do if you reacted to every backman that did this it would be just fist fights all day. I bet that you put the same situation but put someone like say Gaskin in his shoes the bloke would had just whinged to himself that he was being pressured and done nothing i bet. Just a big hero picking on a smaller. Fish i still reckon that dirty skip would had thrown the massive hay maker if the bloke was still in a headlock regardless of who it was though. All young guys cop the rough stuff but when something like that happens to ya then its obvious that they did it because of his age.

Everyone knows if you start niggling blokes and jumper punching and being an overall prick - the day will come when someone bigger and stronger is going to have a go back at you and you'll end up coming off second best. I think you'll find this kid wont be causing any trouble again for a while, he just learnt his lesson earlier than most....

Why didn't his team mates back him up?
If there was a fair bit of niggling going on why didn't older members of the team keep an eye on it and give the opposition opponent he was standing a little warning that you will be taking on more than the kid. This is what i mean about how teams don't protect there young blokes anymore.

at the end of the day the kid is playing senior footy. No one wants to be smacked in the mouth but it happens. Alot of these young blokes come out of the colts with big egos and so called reputations as tuff guys and think that they can still get away with the same thing against the big boys. A harsh lesson but a lesson learned none the less
