Lebanon pulls out of asia cup

Postby dinglinga » Tue Aug 01, 2006 5:53 pm

As announced earlier today ... as you all may be aware adelaide was going to host the lebanon game....

LEBANON has withdrawn from the Asian Cup due to the crisis engulfing the country.

Lebanon was drawn to play against Australia, Kuwait and Bahrain in Group D ot the qualifying competition, but the Lebanon Football Association sent a letter of withdrawal to the Asian Football Confederation today, saying it could not continue in the competition "due to the tragic circumstances our country and people are passing through as a result of the barbaric attack imposed on Lebanon by the Israeli Army".

Australia was due to play Lebanon at Adelaide Oval on August 31 and again in Beirut on November 15.

The AFC Management Board will convene an emergency meeting today to discuss the situation.

Football Federation Australia said that it expected to find out the results of the meeting later today.

"We are aware that Lebanon has written this letter to the AFC," FFA spokesman Stuart Hodge said.
"we are awaiting to hear from the AFC as to their outcomes from their management meeting.

"We'll know more when they tell us."

Lebanon had opened its Group D qualifying captain with a 1-1 home draw against Kuwait.

The top two countries from the group advance to the Asian Cup finals in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam

well if they stayed in the comp i dont think that we would be going there in November possibly a good decision by the Lebanese FA.

Apparently the FFA are trying to get a replacement game for the Adelaide match so dont tear your tickets up yet

A Friendly against NZ perhaps?????

Understandable. Just hope we get a replacement game for the 10, 000 people who have tickets so far.

Very disappointed, i was planning to go to this game. As soon as Adelaide gets an international which actually means something (infact we havent even had a friendly for a while) it gets taken away from us!

If we do get a replacement game it will only be a friendly, and even that is pretty doubtful at this stage.

Stop sooking. I know mates who have shelled out nearly $400 to flow over to SA for the game. I very nearly did myself, but baulked out of it seeing it was on a Thursday night & I'd have to take 2 days off work for it (am heading to the Sydney FC-Tards game in the Estadio Tardisto that weekend in any case).

Will my mates get refunds on their flights, hardly? Will they still fly across despite everything; unlikely as well?

I'm now glad that I did not book flights over there for this game. But still feel sorry for those who did.

Sooking? Just voicing my disappointment for christs sake. It is unfortunate that your mates have already booked and paid for flights which probably wont be refunded, i noticed venuetix are still selling tickets too.
