South American Footbal Season 2010/11

Whilst there might be a trace of interest left from the WC, i thought we could have a South American thread.

JTC, how would you rate the Brazillian and Argie Leagues with some of the European leagues?

Not really sure DA. If you look at the performance from Man U a few years back when they played there in the world club champoinship, they were torn apart. I guess you would have to ask how many Brazillian and Argie stars play in Europe now and how much that degrades the local comps.

It's one of those things that we'll never really know unless there's an extended champions league type comp involving those countries. It would actually be awesome to see a comp like that every 4 years.

Both Brazil and the Argies did have a few players in their WC squads from local leagues, as did URGay.

Re: South American Footbal Season 2010/11

I heard this story on the news earlier this week. It epitomises everything about South American hot bloooded footballers

Player in choking incident gets 27-game ban from Chilean football authorities

SANTIAGO, Chile - Paraguay soccer player Jose Pedroso has been handed a 27-game ban for attempting to choke a referee during a Chilean second-division match on the weekend.

The governing body of Chile's professional league handed down the penalty late Tuesday. It said the defender was banned 20 games for attempting to choke referee Marcelo Miranda, five more for trying a second time to attack Miranda, and two more for the red card Pedroso received just moments before the incident.

Pedroso resigned from the Rangers club after the match on Saturday and said he was returning to Paraguay. Concepcion defeated Rangers 3-0 in the match.
"The player must comply with this if he is playing in Chile and, if not, the Chilean federation will pass on notice of the ban to any other federation where the player might play," federation spokesman Angel Botto said.

The incident involving Pedroso and Miranda was posted on YouTube. It took place shortly after Miranda allowed Concepcion to take a penalty kick four times, waving off attempts because of infractions. Concepcion converted the first, missed the next two and converted the fourth.

Pedroso charged at Miranda later in the match after the referee showed him a second yellow card for a violent tackle. As Miranda approached to show the card, Pedroso slipped behind him and grabbed the referee around the neck. After releasing him, he chased after Miranda and was wrestled to the ground by teammates.

"I'm not the least bit sorry," Pedroso was quoted saying in the Chilean newspaper La Tercera.

Miranda did not file charges.

What is comical (i know it isn't funny) is that he got 20 games for the first attack, then another 5 games for the 2nd attack and finally 2 games for the red card

Apparently the same ref has sent off the same player 3 times already :D

Maradona ready to sign new deal

Argentina coach Diego Maradona is keen to sign a new contract — so long as he is allowed to retain his entire backroom staff. The 49-year-old will today hold talks with Argentinian Football Association president Julio Grondona, who wants the 1986 World Cup winner to pen a new four-year deal.

“I really want to stay, but it depends on Grondona,” Maradona told El Show del Futbol on America TV last night after returning to Buenos Aires following a trip to Venezuela to visit president Hugo Chavez.
“If they touch a hair of one of my guys, even if the masseur or the kitman, I’m going. I want to continue the adventure but not with (just) anyone. I chose these people. I want to continue working with them.”

One of Maradona’s assistants, former Argentina defender Oscar Ruggeri has been criticised by Grondona in the wake of the team’s World Cup exit.
“I already asked and I will continue to ask that Ruggeri joins me,” he added. “It’s a constant struggle. This is the first thing I will discuss with Grondona.”

Argentina struggled to qualify for South Africa after Maradona took over from previous coach Alfio Basile and their campaign came to an end with a 4-0 defeat to Germany in the last eight. Nevertheless, Grondona believes Maradona has been successful so far in difficult circumstances.

He told Radio Mitre last week: “He took over at a very difficult moment and he qualified, which is important. And he finished fifth, better than in other World Cups — all of that should be valued.
“It seems to me to be only correct that he stay on. I don’t see why not.”
However, he added of Ruggeri: “His name was put forward by me, but we had lots of problems. And I’ll tell you something you may find funny — he was the defensive coach.”

ROBINHO EYES SANTOS STAY

Manchester City's record signing Robinho hopes to extend his stay with Santos.
The World Cup star has been on loan at the club where he began his career since January but is due back at Eastlands next month.

Robinho played in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final on Wednesday and will in theory be back in England after playing next week's second leg and an international friendly on August 10.
But the player is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying: "This is my home. I hope I can stay, but it depends on Manchester City. I hope this is not my last game here but, for now, what I have been told is that they [the negotiations] are on a standstill and that I have to go back to Manchester."

With the new 25 man ruling and city active in the transfer markets, I really can't see Robinho returning to City.
