has anyone here seen green street hooligans its the greatest soccer movie/ greatest movie i have ever seen , im not a real big fan of soccer but is my fav movie of all time. if you havnt seen it TRUST ME! it is a must see!

Yeah I have seen it and it's a dumb downed version of a hooligan movie so the American's can understand trust there are much better hooligan movies I list you 3 you should watch and then green street will no longer be you favorite. These are in no particular order

1. I.D. (show how hooligans work in the 70's & 80's also very hard to get a copy)
2. Rise of the foot soldier (must better than gsh if your a west ham fan)
3. Football Factory (shows how it works these days and personal my favorite)

I thought GSH was OK (nothing special, but entertaining enough), good to touch on a subject I hadn't been able to relate to ... I had a hard time believing that Frodo could actually belt people though.

Know what your saying CP. my biggest Beef was trying to get my head round Frodo being able to take on some of Millwall's finest without Samwise next to him. A different choice of actor would have been better IMO but an entertaining movie nevertheless.

i remember reading a couple of books in high school about these 2 brothers who used to be in a "firm". They went & collected stories from all different clubs / firms (Chelsea, West Ham, Millwall, Stoke, Cardiff, Rangers etc) and published them. Brilliant read. Wish i could remember what they were called now.

Also try & find the Doco that was on SBS years ago where a guy went undercover infiltrating the Chelsea Headhunters. Very interesting. Think he had to flee the country once it was released. Also saw afollow up the guy that went to jail for it is now out and still attends chelsea games and signs stuff in the crowd.

A follow up . Thats both of them, The one he got friendly with (Jason marriner) he's the one signing stuff, the one that went to jail (Andrew "nightmare" Frame) for slashing and off duty copper has only just got out. The jurno (Duncan MacIntyre) is in hiding some where has been since the doco was made.

In the 70/80's all of them hade one. These days not as many have one but the most notorious one's are these day Chelsea Headhunters & Millwall there are others some smaller but can hold there own in a fight like the Burnley's group. Also not just an english thing there called other things in other countrys Scotland = casuals (to do with the fashion) on the continet of europe = ultras.

Btw - not saying that other groups arn't around or who's the better group but Chelsea's groups most know for being the biggest in amount of people and for having extreme right wing political ties. Millwall is know for being the best pound for pound groung and compelte nutters.

In the 70/80's other major groups were, West Hams - Inner City Frim, Man utd, Liverpool, Leeds and Tottenham's - Butcher boys / Yid army

I would say that almost every professional club in England had or have a hardcore element of fans. Some are just bigger and more notorious then others. From what i can gather tho many of these "fans" care more about how they do in the fight rather then how their team goes on the pitch.

I went to a Millwall game a few years ago at the new den just to see what it was like.

As WSC said, there are other movies that are far better than GSH, but it's still entertaining.

Firms have become far less influential today than back in the 70's/80's when they almost destroyed football. Today, the policing of games is top notch, with measures like:

-All seated statiums
-Separation of fans both inside and outsude the ground
-Huuuuge presence of bill inside and oustide the ground, including mounted and riot police
-CCTV monitoring

I saw a couple of small things kick off which were stamped out so quick it wasn't funny. Nothing to see here people!!!

In terms of firms, they're still around, but far less visible. I went to a few pubs frequented by members of the Yid Army and N17, but there was never a drama as everyone was a Spurs fan. Wouldn't mess with those lads though.

JTC will be able to give far better insight and has done so in an old thread, but he'll confirm that firm activity these days is very few and far between and really doesn;t have much to do with football in the UK any more.

There will always be isolated incidents like:

Rangers fans at last years UEFA Cup - The Rangers Riot Machine
Chavski Fans after last years Champions League Loss tearing Fulham brodway apart
Spurs and Chavski fans tearing apart the White Horse Pub in Fulham in 2004, plus a BIG fight in Parsons Green tube, then the cemetary.

At the end of the day, it's all about the football, not some skinhead nutters wanting to belt each other!

Yeah but also the rest of europe hasn't implemented in Italy, Poland, Germany and Russia it's still like England was in the 70/80's before the Taylor report with trouble in the ground and just outside the ground. In Italy about 2 years ago a police officer was killed during a football riots so you would hope these countries follow suit.

Going to the football in the 70's / 870's was shit. You had the "firms" who would invariably arrange to meet somewhere and god help you if you happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Then there was the the f$%king idiots. Not a member of any firm, just out for a fight with anyone, willing or not, to take them on. These groups of f%^kwits were more dangerous than the firms. At least the firms generally just looked for each other. These idiots would just gang up and kick the shit out of anyone who happened to be around.

Believe me guys, there is no glory in these films despite the attempts of the film makers. I once saw a lass beaten senseless, trapped on a bus by about a dozen so called football fans, for no more reason than she was there. And no one, including me could do anything about it. It was a shameful time.
