If you're looking at UK football, then you cant forget

Rangers v Celtic (must go close to being the most intense rivalry in the UK, surely)

And if you're looking for continental Football:

Ajax v Feyenoord
Barcelona v Real Madrid
AC Milan v Internationale
Torino v Juventus
Roma v Lazio

And thats just off the top of my head. I don't know much about Greek/Turkish/Russian football but I know Athens has a pretty big derby as does Istanbul and Moscow.

Good point Sir Red.

Gers and Hoops is massive.

I had a quick read of the link Jabber got those tables from and it's interesting the way they've done it. They have surveyed fans of each club and come up with a cross referenced %. So for example, the majority of Spurs fans HATE Arsenal and consider that our biggest rivalry, while some of the Scummers consider Chelsea and Man Utd bigger rivals than Spurs, so the NLD is well down the list.

But ask Gers and Hoops fans and the one thing they will agree on is that they hate each other more than anyone else.

In Turkey, there's Fenerbache and Galatasary.

That's spot on. The research they did only involved clubs involved in the English system hence Cardiff/Swansea...

That's more a one-off incident type rivalry where a couple of things got out of control. It's not a fully-fledged rivalry like an old firm derby.

Other similar rivalries would be:

Liverpool v Juventus - Heysal disaster
Liverpool v Roma - numerous stabbings, which are partly blamed as the cause of heysal.

These are the ugly incidents of football though and better left in the past.

Rivalry should be left on the pitch.

Napoli v Burnley

don't know where the Accy v Morcambe comes from. Was always Accy v Southport when I used to go.

I think it depends on which set of fans you ask too. Ask any Claret who they hate and to a man it will be b4st4rd rovers. I'ts part of our club song and in most of our footy chants.

Ask any b4st4rd fan over say 35ish and they will tell you it's the Clarets. Ask b4st4rd under 35ish and they will say Man U. These people are obviously deluded to think that thier main rivals are Man U.

I think we have done this topic before: But Man U's biggest rivals would be Liverpool or Leeds (of old). Man U v Leeds, they bloody hated each other with a passion. Liverpool is a more recent thing, Liverpool never considered Man U one of thier rivals pre EPL. It was always Everton, the other half of town, as back in the 70's & 80's there wasn't anyone who could rival the Pool.

Arsenal v Tottenham

I was at the European Cup Winner's Cup Semi Final 2nd leg 1994 at Highbury
Arsenal v Paris Saint Germain

Arsenal were leading late in the game having wrapped up a spot in the final when the whole Arsenal crowd started taunting Tottenham.
" Tottenham, where are you now" or something to that effect.
Made me think, they must REALLY hate them.

Your friend is true, there is a chance the Mighty Reds could play the 'Other Reds' from Madchester :)

IIRC by making the ACL final (even if we don't win...looking pretty bad at HT), we qualified for the Club World Championships. If we win the ACL we go straight into the CWC, if we get humped by Gamba (again, not looking good at the mo) we will have to beat Waitakere FC (sp?) from NZ (OFC Champions) to qualify. If we make the CWC, I think we have to win a game to then qualify to play ManUre.
