Watched a movie called "Green Street Hooligans" last night and I find the topic of English firms' and member lifestyles etc., rather interesting.

I've managed to track down (although haven't watched yet), a couple of other like films "Football Factory" and "Rise Of The Footsoldier" - Anyone seen these and/or can recommend others?

I have GSH ready to roll just haven't watched it yet? Any good? Where's the review?

Yeah I didn't mind it mate, just finished reading the reviews on http://www.imdb.com where most English punters weren't too impressed, the majority of which label "Football Factory" as being much closer to reality.

There's a film called ID about a police officer who infiltrates a firm attached to a fictional team called Shadwell Town. Its okay, not great, but worth a watch.

GSH is not a bad movie but apparently the 'Football factory' is closer to reality as GSH has a bit of hollywood attached to it.

not sure if anyone saw the DOCCO that was on SBS where the journo went undercover to get into the headhunters..........that was very interesting.

Having been to a few games, the firm culture is alive and well. There are some VERY scary characters around the place and I've seen a pretty violent fight outside White Hart Lane with some Man U fans.

Last weekend, I was heading to a pub near Wembley to watch the Carling Cup with some Spurs fans, when my mate called to warn me off, saying the Chavski firm was heading there.

Also last weekend, I saw a huge bunch of skinhead Leyton Orient fans getting forcefully removed from a pub for their loutish behaviour. It was near a busy market and a lot of people were quite scared.

It's a far cry from Aussie rules where despite the rivalry, opposing fans can sit together in relative peace. Having been to every Power showdown since our inception, I've NEVER seen a fight between supporters. (Although Port Magpies v Centrals is a different story!!! )

I would be very disappointed if Power fans got into showdown fights with 60 yr old women DA

DA, went to the last Suburban showdown as it was hailed between Carlton v Collingwood, at Princes Park, and the Blues hammered them by more than 100 points. After the game a bunch of Collingwood "fans" started to pick on some Carlton bloke, next thing she was on ! About 50 odd Collingwood blokes surrounded by about 200 Carlton blokes (**** knows where they materialised from) and fists flying everywhere...I just stood and watched...The best thing though, was the coppers on horse back watching it ! They must of hated Collingwood too !! Ohh yeah they lost the fight as well !!

Have never seen anything of note at a United game, but saw some beauties at the old City (Juve) games....

Watched Rise of the Footsoldier last night. Quite a heavy film with violence and a strong theme.

I enjoyed it but not for the faint hearted as some sections are quite graphic. Quite daunting to know these sort of people exist and its something they seek out. Are they fans of soccer or just blokes looking for a fight??

I did a bit of homework on the "Chelsea Grin" last night, pretty hard to fathom what some of these hooligans will do to other people, particularly stuff that will alter a persons features for the remainder of their years!

I used to drink with a bloke when I lived in Newcastle who was involved with the Seaburn Casuals (one of Sunderland's mobs) and he was a great bloke most of the time, just an absolute w@nker on weekends. Hence I never attended matches with him. The psychology of these types is very strange to say the least.

I can't believe how many people have the Chelsea Smile. In 9 months, I've seen at least 10 people over here with one and not all of them were typical skin head hooligans. When my parents came to visit, they didn't believe me until while walking down Kensington High Street (a nice part of London in Chelsea territory) we saw 3 people in 1 day sporting the grin. Disturbing stuff!

I watched Football Factory a couple of months a go, it was really good. Definitely worth watching.

I also watched a documentary on away fans. It showed a woman who supported Leeds United travelling down to watch them play Millwall. There was 1 police officer for every 17 fans at the game. They closed down the train station and gave the Leeds Supporters a walking escort to the game. Then the Millwall supporters started up a chant "who's the slapper". When you looked through the crowd there were hardly any women at the game. A lot of the English people I work with can't believe it when I tell them that 50% of the crowd at sporting matches in Australia are female.

I want to go to some games but none of my friends over here like sport that much, but I've been told not to go by myself. Very hard to comprehend.

Who do you support?

I've been to 4 games over here (2 at White hart Lane, 1 at Fulham and 1 at Reading) and haven't had a problem. The Fulham game and 1 of the WHL games I attended by myself as was fine. Football hooliganism isnt as openly prevalent as it used to be due to policing at matches as you describe, but the firm culture is definitely alive and well.

There are precautions you can take like not wearing a football strip, not going into pubs around the grounds on matchday (unless you know for sure it's a safe pub) and sticking with the crowds on the high roads and around public transport where there's plenty of police.

I'd suggest going to a Fulham, Reading or QPR game as a home fan and you'll be fine. I also would avoid going to West Ham, Tottenham, Chelsea, Millwall and Luton as an away fan, and just like in Green Street Hooligans - DO NOT USE THE EAST HAM TUBE STATION ON WEST HAM MATCHDAYS!.
