Now I have to say that although I enjoy a good game of soccer, I'm not a big fan.

However, I ask this question genuinely.

If a player is fouled in the penalty area, why shouldn't he be the one to take the penalty?

Why should someone who wasn't involved have a free shot?

Good question..similar to a free kick in general play, anyone can take them.
It's not much different to the Rugby codes (especially Union) where there is a penalty and they use a penalty specialist not
the person who it was for.
Would have to delve in the FIFA rulebook to see if there is a answer.

Yeah I know that one. The rule is when a penalty is taken the players except the kicktaker, must be a minimum of 9.5 m (or 10 yards) from the penalty marker. The "D" is called the penalty arc...
Basically to ensure ALL players except the kicktaker do not receive a unfair advantage by being closer to pounce* on rebounds etc....

I watched some of the CCM v Sydney game. Great game, but 2 more questions.

What is the purpose of the big circle in the middle of the ground?

Why were 2 players sent off for handball - at least one looked accidental, when another player deliberately trips someone and breaks his leg, but gets a yellow card?

the centre circle is designed for only 2 players of the team kicking off, all other players are to remain outside that circle for the kick off. thats what i think it is anyway

Dude, no offence but showing how a club has won so many games without winning a Grand Final makes it look worse.
It's a bit like Power supporters trying to claim they were successful in 2007!
Actually the Power and Disunited have a lot in common, both got flogged by record amounts in their respective Grand Finals in 2007 and both are the respective jokes of their competitions whilst having a good battle amongst themselves as to who truly is the worse South Australian side in a national competition.
Despite my dislike of Port Power I must admit at least they've won a premiership in their competition so there's no doubting that Adelaide Disunited truly are the joke of South Australia.

Anyway, in soccer currently/recently there's only 3 tables worth looking at:

1) A League Championships: Sydney 1, Melbourne 1.

2) NSL Championships: Perth 2.

and this year's premiership table:

3) Central Coast Zebras Top.

The other sides are a complete waste of space.

I won't even go into if there was a table which had to do with "class" as we all know the result there.

Of course if we wanted to go back further historically in regard to soccer in this country then we could at least see there was one club that represented South Australia with pride (and didn't have supporters rioting or throwing things on the pitch) when the standard was even higher than it is now. Oh for those days.

Correct the opponent of the team must be a minimum of 9.15 mtrs away from the ball until it is in play.

This really isn't a soccer question, basically most outdoor sports which involving the booting of a ball allow anyone to take a penatly/free/etc.
Soccer, Gridiron, Rugby League, Rugby Union all do.

Perhaps we should be asking the reverse question of Football?

Christ, I know my football team would have scored at least 10 more goals if it was that way inclined!

Struth some of the derbys between Juve & Hellas ( ) weren't exactly peaceful occasions....

I won't say that ADelaide City never had crowd trouble but I will say the City sides between 86 - 96 would destroy any current A League side.

True, I used to love attending the City games pre-force ( ), even though I attended as the Force as well.
The City - Hellas games were a riot (in more than one sense), and the school I went too, was predominatly Greek
so hence my joy at watching City and letting all the "Hella Boys" know about it....

The standard of the NSL was of a fantastic level in general back then.

However the NSL was dying a painful death and the A-League has taken football to a higher level in regard to
general acceptance across the board not just ethnic groups.

Perth Glory were the leaders in that regard, as they were really the first side in the competition not to be based around
any ethnic community.

And ironically Perth Glory got much better crowds, members and publicity in the NSL with interest waining the longer the A-League goes on.
And I disagree, the Brisbane Strikers, Canberra City and Canberra Cosmos were all mainstream IIRC.
Other "mainstreaem" clubs that didn't live too long were the Northern Spirit, Paramatta Power and Carlton.
Ironically the Brisbane Strikers were more mainstream than the Queensland Roar who are a derivitive of the Brisbane Lions Soccer club who were a Dutch club.

Sad part about the A-League is its driving the game bankrupt quicker than the NSL ever did. A 11 million dollar loss to FFA last year alone!
Luckily for soccer in this country the Labor party are giving them 32 million over the next 4 years.
I might go out and run a business completely incompetently at a loss and see if the Labor party will help me out.
