Had high hopes at the start of these Games that we could be on par with our recent efforts, but at the half way mark that clearly isn't happening. Where do you think we will end up on that table? For mine, we will end up with 8 or 9 gold still and be just below 1956.

Where do you see the remaining gold coming from?

4 or 5 at best, which means 2 or 3 in reality!

Similar to 1984, with a good TOTAL but lacking in the Gold

I think this shows how amazing the results of the 3 previous were ... Australia certainly have punched way above their weight.

Probably more a reflection of the reduction in spend in the last 4 years ... plus a low conversion rate of gold/silver at this meet.

What surprised me when looking at that table was 1988. I've always remembered the flack received after 1984 but we were worse in 1988, with a sharp improvement until this year.

As a result of the Crawford report, but has money actually gone into grass roots sports??

There's the rub ... either spread the dollars around as much as possible, or (as in previous years) just target medals.

You would hope that the first method will give a longer term benefit.

If you listen to the experts Aussies just dont work hard enough.
Time to get the chequebook out and head overseas, We could buy a heap of Eastern European or Asian medallists with what we have spent on our mob.

Or start paying our coaches more so they don't chase better money elsewhere.
