yaaaay can't wait :D

Did I hear correctly on 5aa the other day that SA has a lad through into the equestrian team ?

There was a news report here last week about the Iraq Olympic team...a follow up of this earlier story...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle ... 450492.stm

If ever a team deserved the chance to take part. As well as the politics the report said that a female member of the team now has to train in the Kurdish north because insurgents in Baghdad were taking pot-shots at her during training. Two other team members were kidnapped and murdered by insurgents and the others risk the same every day.

It'll be so unfair if the IOC doesn't get this sorted out. Can't be many teams that take such risks for their sport [-o< Good luck to them.

Australia's Jana Rawlinson is out of the Olympics

JANA Rawlinson has tonight told how she is "shattered" and "numb" after a toe injury forced her to pull out of the Beijing Olympics.
Complications with the injury has brought an end to Rawlinson's Olympic campaign.

"I am numb,'' Rawlinson told News Limited's Beijing Now website tonight.

"I'm shattered. I feel like I have let a lot of people down.

"I have thought about this really hard and made the decision on Monday night but had two nights to sleep on it.

"Yesterday I went to the track on my own and tried to run again but I still couldn't even run in a straight line.

"We have tried everything now and I'm at the stage where I can't actually even run.''

It is a sad case of deja vu for the 25-year-old who suffered a knee injury on the eve of the Athens Olympics four years ago which effectively ruined her chances of gold.

The Official Beijing Posters have been launched. The logo poster I think is a little plane and boring but I do like the sports posters.

Cheers Tassie...agree the sports ones are good. I think their logo is a lot better than our bright pink gay pride thing for London 2012
Found a few more on the beijing website...

Enjoy it guys. I dropped in out of curiosity while the wife gets brunch.
I doubt I'll bother to watch any of the Olympics on TV, unless it is while waiting for something else to start.
I've always seen them as more about Politics than Sport, and this one certainly is.

I think all sport these days has a political element especially in the biggest sports event in the world but that is the stuff that goes on in backround. I do have an interest in that side of the games but by far the biggest and most important thing about the game is the athletes and in some cases there sub human performances. If you denying yourself the chance to some of the great sporting moment that will go down in history as some of the best just because in the back ground politics plays a small part in the games I guess that will be your loss. You really wont watch the men’s 1500m swimming final to see Grant Hackett win his 3rd gold medal?

I really hope there will be more super human performances than sub human performances

Seriously, I can't wait for the games to start, I love watching the sports that don't get any of the spotlight in Australia except for when the Olympics are on. I'm always an expert diving judge by the time the games have finished! I'll have to bring a telly to work from home I reckon!

We might not get to see another Eric the Eel...pity cos even if they have no hope of winning anything I do think characters like him and Eddie the Eagle (Brit ski jumper for you young 'uns  ) help bring in a wider audience that might not watch otherwise...but we still have people taking part against the odds.

Found this part of the BBC site that tells the stories of half a dozen athletes from different countries who should be an inspriation to everyone.

Probably not. Swimming is another of those things I enjoy doing but not watching. I'd watch any replays of another "Eddie the Eel" though!
Although I've played a few sports I generally don't get much out of watching them. Aussie Rules and Gaelic Football are the exceptions.
I prefer real cricket to the shorter versions of the game too, but do watch bits of 50 over matches.
