Murali better than Warne?

Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has weighed into the age old argument comparing himself to Australia's Shane Warne, saying that he has performed better against teams that are better players of spin.

While Muralitharan admits that there is no rivalry shared between the pair, he told the Sunday Herald Sun that despite having had more opportunities against teams like India, he has taken the Test wickets to back up his claim.

"Shane is a very fine bowler, but there is no rivalry between us," he said.

"It could be said I have done better than Shane against teams like India, who are great players of spinners," he added.

"But I've also had the opportunity to play more often on their wickets and I'm used to them more than Shane."

However stats don't always give a clear picture of events.

The fact that over 100 of Muralitharan's Test wickets have come against minnows Zimbabwe and Bangladesh must be given careful consideration, though Muralitharan believes that irrelevant of the opposition, one Test wicket is as valuable as the next.

"I took the wickets and they were Tests," he said.

Muralitharan also believes that England will have a tough time ahead of them when they come to defend the Ashes in the 2006-07 summer.

He pointed towards the differences in bowling conditions between Australia and England as an area where the English will struggle.

"It's unlikely the English bowlers will be able to get the same seam bowling with the Kookaburra balls…they do not have as high a seam as the Duke balls they use in England," he said.

"The Australians are used to the extra bounce on their wickets."

Yeah but Warnie actually bowls the ball Murali. One wicket is the same as the next, yeah right.

Also not that the arcticle discusses Murlies view on the next ashes battle. He believes that the poms wont be able to get the same amount of seam and swing here. which he believes will be englands downfall, and well he may well be right.

murali also bowls 100 overs a test which is about 80% of SL bowling per innings...he hasnt had to compete with a mcgrath to get wickets also...warne has done fantastic to get the wickets he has done as mcgrath has also got over 500...thats 1100 wickets between the 2 of them...an argument could be had by saying...no mcgrath, warney could have 850-900 wickets...

plus, murali is a freaking chucka....

I just fell of my chair - no really I did and spilt my beer

i cant believe what the chucker was thinking when he said that - he clearly is deflecting the fact he is not the same as the great warney and is even trying to justify over 100 wickets against well lets say against international back yard cricket sides.

Has any other Ssi Lankan bowler taken more than 200 wickets ??????

Great point about the Warne/Mcgrath - Jimmy
