Mark Sorrell to coach SA

Postby Dogwatcher » Tue May 08, 2007 2:09 pm

Former Salisbury player (wicketkeeper) and current Australian women's coach Mark Sorrell has been appointed to replace Wayne Phillips as Redbacks coach.

He'll return from his interstate base to coach the hapless and underperforming Reddies.

Interesting appointment - cosnidering many thought a much more high profile apptment might be made.

Good luck to him anyway.

They should have renamed the job

It isnt head coach anymore, it is more like English Premier League Soccer

He is a manager, and will have specialised coaches under his guidance (i.e. batting, bowling and fielding coaches)

I guess time will tell if the decision was the right one. Pretty brave move appointing someone who has never played to the level that the players he's coaching are. Would imagine a lot of responsibility would fall to the senior players (Lehmann, Gillespie, Elliott) and any support staff (such as Rod Marsh) to teach the up and comers about the 4 day game.

Still, I don't think getting a name for the sake of getting a name is the right way to go and there is no reason why Sorrell can't be a success if the group all work in the same direction. Good luck to him. Would be good to see SA cricket follow in the foot steps of what Tassie have been able to do.
