Who's gonna get the chop from the CA contract list

Postby am Bays » Fri Mar 23, 2007 8:27 pm

With Warne, Langer, McGrath, and Martyn retired who else will get the chop? With the World Cup cycle over and the ASHES regained could be a real changing of the guard in Australian Cricket over the next year as the selectors look towards the 2009 ASHES series and the 2011 World Cup.

I think Cullen, Gillespie, and to a leser extent Hogg, Katich and MacGill are in touble too. Hogg, MacGill, Cullen and Katich might get saved if the selectors are reluctant to make too many changes to list, MacGill has the advantage that he is the short term replacement for Warne. However given Hogg and Katich's age and McGill's and Cullens poor form this year I can see them being dropped.

With seven - nine spots available who will come in?

Rodgers (Langer), Voges (Martyn) and Hilfenhaus (McGrath) appear to be monty's for contracts. Cullen Bailey is my choice for Warnes spot.

Tim Paine has had a good season so he might be added to the squad and is a possible longterm 'keeping option after Haddin. Hartely is the best of the young glovemen but has had a stinker of a year with the bat. The other option here is Ronchi.

Noffke has had a good season for QLD so he might get elevated back on to list for Gillespie who realistically wont get picked again for Australia.

Doran (Qld) and Casson (NSW) Doherty (TAS) could get spinners spots instead of Hogg, Cullan and MacGill but with no real outstanding young spinners demanding to get picked Hogg, Cullen and MacGill might stay on.

In short could be big changes next year, I'd be interested to see other people's thoughts.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Tim Paine has alot of work to do if he is to get the gloves in any Australian team. Struggled with both keeping and batting responsibilites then struggled with just his batting in the end. However he does have age on his side at only 22 from memory.

Cullen will have to take a pay cut as a penalty for his poor form and MacGill maybe just too old to be the short term Warne option.

Hilfenhaus can safely retire his brickies trowel and work boots, he aint gunna lay brick for a while

Rogers is 29 and if he doesnt get a deal now then sadly his chance maybe gone

Bailey could come under consideration with reasonable form being the first choice spinner and knows how to hold a bat too

Andrew McDonald from Victoria had a stellar year with over 750 runs and 25 wickets (only the fourth player to do so in 115 years) could he be the dark horse choice???????

The Dads Army look of that list is less palatable with McGrath, Warne and Martyn gone. I have a sneaking suspicion that McGill might be finished (hope I'm wrong) and is anyone else concerned about the fact that Clark and Hogg are both over 30? We need Danny Cullen to come on fast IMO.

I think Cullen Bailey is a better long term option than Dan Cullen.
