I tend to agree that 5 days would be the way to go but currently for SA making it to the 4th day is a challenge so it wouldn't affect them much. Not sure it would ever happen but i do agree with you.

The Sheffield Shield has prepared good test cricketers consistently for well over a hundred years. These days it doesn't draw dick and the test team is winning so why spend more money on something that isn't broken? I think you are underestimating just how tough the domestic scene is here in Australia, especially in comparison with other test playing nations. Nope, it's fine the way it is.

im not underestimating the quality of our comp.

I just cant see why we shouldnt make it 5 days.

Its very well to say if it aint broke why fix it but if u can make it better why not?

keep it the way it is.

5 days, my god the REDBACKS would be organising golf days for the 4th day twilight and 5th days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i guess there are more declarations etc because teams arent generally able to bowl out the other team, more declarations forcing 4th inning run chases for full points, i think makes it more entertaining.

Dash, you are automatically assuming that the five day competition would improve the standard and make it a better comp. 'Lets prepare people for test cricket' you said, thus implying that the current set up does not do this effectively. I for one have no problems with declarations setting up wins. If a side is chasing 300 plus in the last day to get the outright points then this comes very close to replicating what the Aussies try to do every day when they play Test cricket, it also promotes and rewards imaginative captaincy and attacking cricket throughout the course of the match and not just over the last four or five sessions of a five day match.

So why shouldn't they make it five days? I referred to this when I said the Shield doesn't draw dick and it doesn't. Why spend the extra day interstate, draining state coffers with additional expenses on a comp that is already doing it's job? You would just be burning money mate. Another possibility is that of injuries, particularly to the bowlers. Moo Moo teams play ten matches a year and the top two play eleven, and that's every Australian season not once every three years or so. No test nation plays eleven test matches from October to March every year. The Shield comp is meant to be a step up from grade and players who graduate from the domestic scene are expected to step up again when they get to wear that baggy green cap. I think the Shield does it's job and I enjoy watching Shield cricket rather than the Franger Cup type of stuff or the pointless 20/20 stuff.

Cheers,

Spot on REB. The comp as it stand certainly promotes imaginative captaincy and MAKES captains think about declarations. I am still surprised the Shield crowds are so low. With the standard of cricket played (obviously not by the Redbacks tho) and the attacking nature of the game over 4 days I reckon its great fun to watch. Especially if you can get a game on day 4 were a side needs 300+ to win and the other needs 10 wickets.

I couldnt be ****** arguing about it.

Maybe dash, but I reckon injuries might end up being the bigger problem. If every state only played each other once it might work.

Without a shadow of doubt REB is the guru MAG80 is right Ive always said it.
He learnt cricket quicker than me
REB playing as an opening batsman for WYC would always be at Adelaide oval
on Saturdays by about 1-45 to watch the shield games

Agree with everyones points
4 days is a better spectators sport
5 days gives spinners greater impetus

The thing that perplexes me is the change of rules for finals in various cricket codes
REB/BOONEY and I played in a comp where we played over 2 weeks saturday
to saturday bowling about 70 overs each per week all year
In the grand final we played a prehistoric final saturday + sunday the next day
That was a totally different game VERY DUMB

P/CUP is played over 4 days for 10 games a year and the final is over 5
Different again
Might as well make it 6 0r 7 days
The home sides usually cheat and make a placid track as a draw is suffice.

No problems. I am not, nor do I wish to be a cricket "guru". My images of a "guru" is a very fat man with long hair and earrings, sitting crossed legged on a mountain top all alone :)

I say keep the state comp at 4 days, and if necessary extend play an hour a day. That would make available an extra 4 hours which would be plenty. It would also ensure longer spells each day for spinners.

The only thing that worries me about more available time is batsmen may feel they need to occupy the crease more, thus creating less attacking and attractive cricket.

To prevent the home team from preparing a road, batting for 2 days and shutting down the game.

Pretty darn close too Hawker LOL. I work on the quantity not quality. I reckon if I crap on long enough eventually I have to get something right! But then again maybe not! Still, the footy season approaches and I can still fall in a heap just like my footy teams DOH.
