87 World Cup

Postby am Bays » Tue Jan 02, 2007 10:21 pm

In the lunch breaks of the India v SAf tests they have been showing highlights of "classic" world series cup games from the 80s and 90s.

Tonight they showed Australia vs the Windies from January 1987. Goven that this was 8 months from the 87 World Cup the difference in teh team that played in January 87 compared to September 87 was staggering.

In January 87 the side in batting order was:

Marsh
Border
Jones
Whellam
Ritchie
Waugh
O'Donnell
Zoehrer
Matthews
Taylor
Davis
MacClay (12th Man)

Come September Whellam, Ritchie, Zoehrer, Matthews, Davis and MacClay were all gone to be replaced by

Boon, Valetta, Dyer, McDermott, Reid, May,

Taylor was 12th Man for the final with Moody and Zessers helping him mix the Staminade....

given todays attitudes wth repsct to building squads towards major tournaments, it is strange that the side could change so much from towards the end of the 86-87 summer compared to the World Cup that started in August.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
