Bit of a surprise he went out on his own terms. Has been a great player for Australia.

I'm surprised he has retired from one day cricket as well.

Fat Alberton actually called this would happen about 5.30 pm last Tuesday...

Give the man a bun!
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

Damien Martyn you are a legend for putting the game and the team above yourself in part he said:

"However, I'm also aware of the tremendous challenges facing Australian cricket including this current Ashes series. Such challenges require people who are more than 100 per cent committed, dedicated, disciplined and passionate about the game, what it seeks to achieve and how those involved in the game can best serve cricket, sport and the wider community."

Anyone who gives up a six figure salary when they are still capable of rocking up and getting the pay-cheque go up in my estimation of them..

He went on to say....

"I said to myself when I made this decision in the last 48 hours that I may lose friends in doing what I'm doing. But I also said to myself that if I stayed doing what I was doing I may equally lose respect for myself and the friendship of those around me who are entitled to expect from me more than 100 per cent."

Any friends who he may loses out of this aren't true friends, D Martyn rest assured you whave won the respect of the Australian cricket community for doing this.

Well played on a magnificent career.

Those quotes are taken from the article Aerie has linked to in his post.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

That will be an interesting selection considering they have had bowlers filling up the squads in the first two Tests. Rogers and North have the most runs in the Pura Cup this season and Jaques has been the one waiting in the wings. If only Cosgrove had scored some big centuries this season he would have been a good chance given his form last year. I would bat Hussey at 4, North at 5 and Clarke at 6 for the WACA.

Martyn debuted against the West Indies in 1992 and Ambrose got him in both innings. After a long lay off he has been an integral part of the Aussie line up for the past 5 years in both forms of the game, although his Test career hasn't been great since the Ashes in 2005. He was averaging over 50 for much of this decade. His career stats: 67 Tests, 4406 runs @ 46.37. I'll remember him for his elegant stroke play - in the mould of Mark Waugh.

I'll say. What a call. Well done on a great career DMartyn. Not one of my favourites though, not much point kissing his a55 now it's all over for him. I did think he was unfairly victimised over that 94 South Africa test loss though. What a test to finish up on in Adelaide.

Good player in his day - but - all this put himself before the team??? he just jumped before he was pushed.... who knows the selectors might have even told him... if he truly put the team before himself he would have made way for jacques at the start of the series. IMO

Wow! That came as a huge shock - but good on him, he has gone out on his own terms with dignity. Certainly one of the most technically correct and graceful batsmen that has played for Australia. He made it look extremely easy a lot of the time.

Maybe this was the reason why he played those shots on Tuesday in Adelaide, tried to go out with a bang..

Walking out with a test average of 46 Dutchman, call him what you will,I'll bet his average is 46 higher than yours.

Well done on a solid career,he worked hard to break into one of the strongest Aussie sides for decades, and although much malinged, has performed admirably.
PAFC. Forever.

LOOK OUT, WE'RE COMING!

In 50 years time his name and performance will read as well as pretty much any other in those awesome Aussie teams ... Was never his greatest fan, although I did feel he was made the scapegoat after last years Ashes series, but the flipside is he got a much better trot than our Boof.

Anyway good luck to him!

Has to be Jaques for mine and that's regardless of whether he's batting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6.

Exactly right there ORDB - realistically the new team should look like this:

Langer
Hayden
Ponting
Hussey (is the no-brainer for this position, he has to play here and proved Tuesday night that he is more than capable)
Clarke
Jaques (I really hope he gets in - the prospect of him batting with an in-form Gilly is exciting)
Gilchrist
Warne
Lee
Clark
McGrath

I have no real opinion on who should get the spot but what chance Symonds or North from WA who has made a pile of runs (498 at 83.00) including two tons on the WACA....
