Indian media calls Champions Trophy winners 'rude and arrogant'

Rude celebrations?: Australia couldn't wait to get their hands on the trophy

Australia have been described as "rude and arrogant" by the Indian media following unsavoury incidents after their Champions Trophy win. Ricky Ponting's men were taken to task for pushing Sharad Pawar, the BCCI president and an Indian government minister, off the presentation dais after their eight-wicket win over the West Indies in Sunday's final in Mumbai.

Ponting, who was visibly impatient after the long presentation ceremony, gestured towards Pawar with his forefinger, asking him to quickly give away the trophy, which Australia had won for the first time. Newspapers on Tuesday carried front-page pictures of Damien Martyn pushing Pawar with his right hand, urging him to get off the stage so that the team could pose with the trophy.

The picture in the Indian Express came under the headline: "This is how champions behave when they get the trophy." The Times of India added: "They are supposed to be aggressive, even rude on the field. On Sunday, Australia showed they are not exactly polite off it too."

Sachin Tendulkar, who usually prefers to stay silent on most controversial matters, also took a swipe at the Australians. "I was not watching the proceedings but from what I heard, it was unpleasant and uncalled for," Tendulkar said at a sponsors' function in Mumbai on Monday. "Firstly, it should never have happened. It's important to show respect to a person who is so dear to the cricketers and is involved with cricket. Such incidents should be avoided."

Dilip Vengsarkar, India's chief cricket selector, added: "You expect such behaviour from uneducated people. If they wanted to pose for photographs, they could have politely requested him. This is appalling."

Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, described the incident as "unintentional", but he also said players "seem to leave good sense behind". "Anyway, you know how players are once they get on the cricket field."

However, Pawar laughed off the incident. "It was a small thing, a stupid thing," Pawar said in the Hindustan Times. "I don't want to react."

Indian media calls Champions Trophy winners 'rude and arrogant'
Cricket Australia to investigate claims

The Indian public have shown their displeasure at the reports

Cricket Australia said on Tuesday it would investigate reports of rude behaviour by the Australian team after their Champions Trophy win in India. Australia were taken to task in Indian newspapers for pushing Sharad Pawar, the BCCI chief, off the presentation dais after they beat West Indies in Sunday's final at the Brabourne Stadium.

The Australians arrived home on Tuesday to prepare for this month's home Ashes series with England that kicks off at Brisbane from November 23.

Cricket Australia (CA) spokesman Peter Young said the organisation would investigate the claims this week. "The players have only just arrived back in Australia and over the course of the next few days, we will just be finding out what, if anything, did or did not happen," he said.

Young said the players had talked about the importance of respect for players and officials at the pre-Ashes boot camp in August.

Damien Martyn and Ricky Ponting, both at the forefront of the controversy, could not be reached for comment late Tuesday

If S. Tendulker didn't see it, why did he comment?

As if Martyn didn't have enough problems with LBW's last Ashes. With 4 legs he's no hope. A good idea to tie his back leg to his front leg though, to minimise the chance of hit wicket.

The first bloke on the left looks very proud of his donkey (in an "I'm gonna blow up this donkey" kind of way) but the bloke to his left is looking at him like he is a freak. I reckon the fanatical Indians get caught up in stuff far too easily - if the papers said nothing, no one would have given a shit and this poor donkey wouldn't need more of a wash than usual.

Exactly! I was going to say the same thing when i saw this thread as i have already read the article.

"I didnt see it but some biased indian guy told me it happened so it must be true"

The Indians love to have lengthy presentations and all their big boys like to hog the spotlight when it should all be about the victorious team. If he had moved out the way when the aussies were preparing for their team photo everything would have been fine.

I think they are just bitter that they bombed out of their own tournament while the aussies won yet again.

Any excuse other countries have of sticking it to the Aussies, they take it. I realise the Aussies aren't perfect in every way but neither are other countries, not even close.

In Australia, if we took a donkey and painted him like that, we'd be facing animal cruelty charges. Why don't we make a complaint about the way Indians treat their animals? I bet they wouldn't care less what we think, which is precisely the way I feel about their complaints about the Aussies.
