Shoaib returns positive test
By staff writers and wires
October 16, 2006 PAKISTAN fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been pulled from the Champions Trophy after returning a positive drugs test, the Pakistan Cricket Board reported today.

Shoaib and teammate Mohammad Asif both tested positive for substances that have yet to be clarified.

A PCB official said a formal announcement will be made after an urgent board meeting later today.

"Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif have been recalled after they tested positive in an internal doping test conducted by the PCB," the official said, adding that there would be an official announcement later Monday.

The tests were conducted by Pakistan before the players left for the limited-overs tournament, which involves all the Test-playing nations and is second only to the World Cup in stature.

The International Cricket Council in collaboration with the World Anti-Doping Agency has also introduced strict dope tests at the ICC Champions Trophy, being hosted by India.

Two players from each of the 10 participating teams were to be selected at random and subjected to drug tests by WADA officials during the tournament, which began its group stage matches this weekend.

Drug testing was trialled at the last World Cup in South Africa, but this Champions Trophy is the first hig-level cricket contest to officially test for drugs.

WADA'S nearest lab is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It has no facilities in India.

Pakistan cricket is still reeling from the ball-tampering fiasco that caused the team to forfeit the recent fourth Test against England at The Oval.

That was followed by controversy over the captaincy and the resignation of board chairman Shaharyar Khan.

Inzamam ul-Haq was banned for five games as a result of the Oval debacle and is not present at the Champions Trophy as a result.

Pakistan is due to begin its Champions Trophy campaign tomorrow with a match against Sri Lanka.

what I want to know is- will these players recieve a 12 month ban like Warney, or because th PCB carried out the testing, & hurried them off home, is this to cover up for something far more serious, & prevent the World Anti-Doping Association from carrying out tests that carry some serious penalties?

Rumour from the Karachi Times has it Darryl Hair surruptitiously supplied the drugs to Shoaib and Asif at tea on the 4th day at The oval, the ball tampering was a ruse to get them off the ground.

It is a conspiracy on behalf of the imperial white lords from the ICC who have a vendetta agaonst all nations from the sub-continant.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Bingo.

Laughable. Found guilty, then suspension overturned on appeal.

as reported in the last 24 hours
.
A PAKISTAN tribunal has cleared fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif of doping offences and lifted their long-term bans.

The cricketers were exonerated when the panel ruled the players had not been given sufficient warning the supplements they were taking could be contaminated by the steroid.

SD Says, if you are a full time proffessional sportsman, you have a personal responsibility to yourself to have a clear understanding of what ever supplements you are chowing down on

VERY SOFT RULING and I am worried about the precedent it sets

This is close to the worst thing that has happened to cricket in the last ,,,,, maybe ever. Makes a joke out of the rules when you can just clear players because you need them.

I guess we just dont have a level playing field.

Will have to wait until they tour and give them heaps, never been one to bait teams but if they want to be drug taking cheats they shoudl pay the price one way or the other.
When to much sport is never enough
