I think Titus O'Reilly said it perfectly when he said its like part of our childhod dying.
Very sad at such a young age.
RIP Dean

He changed the game and managed to follow up his attitude/confidence with ability (perhaps the armband bit with Curtly was an exception). I watched just about all of his century at the Oval in 1989 sitting only a few metres from the Australian changeroom balcony. Great day/s. Then years later he came up to Mt Osmond for a few rounds of golf and chatted with us in the club house. Genuine bloke, humble and friendly. 2020 outdoing itself.

Some would remember Deano playing agaist SA at Adelaide oval back in the day when the Sheffield Shield meant something. Jones was the form batsman in Australia and liked to dominate medium pacers by batting well forward of his crease. David Hookes instructed Andrew Zesers to bowl two feet outside off stump. Deano instinctively played forward, but had to let the ball pass because it wss too wide. To his horror, Hookesy had moved to his left at first slip, took the ball and threw down the stumps .... onya bike Deano. I can see the two of them getting back together and reminiscing over a beer or two.

Certainly do remember it.
Typical Hooksey style, thinking outside the box.
Brilliant piece of play.

Like Hooksey's "short run" trick.

I was lucky enough to meet him a few times in his capacity as a coach. Incredibly forthright and thought about things just a bit differently to mainstream.

His innings for Australia when he finished on 99 after taking a bye from a wide on what was to be the last ball has always been a favourite of mine.

It sucks arse when your heroes are gone.

So sad, but so appropriate at the same time, gee they did well to get him back to Melbourne so quick for the family.

His wife put out a statement yesterday and made special mention of DFAT for organising his return as quickly as they did.

Incredible really, I guess the BCCI would have wielded some influence also.
