Redbacks confirm 2020-21 contract list
SACA Media

Three exciting rookies and three Premier Cricket run machines have been added to South Australia's squad for the 2020-21 season.

In addition to Cricket Australia contracted players Travis Head, Alex Carey and Kane Richardson, the West End Redbacks welcome a host of talent for the new year.

Glenelg's Liam Scott, and twin brothers from Sturt Corey Kelly and Thomas Kelly have earned rookie contracts for the first time.

Scott and Corey were both selected in Australia’s U19 World Cup squad in South Africa in January and are pace bowling allrounders, and Thomas is a promising top/middle-order batsman.

Thomas, 19, was South Australia’s top runscorer at the 2019 U19 National Championships in Perth with 356 at 71.2.

Scott, 19, has been elevated to a rookie contract after making his debut for South Australia against Western Australia at the WACA last season.

Will Bosisto, Brad Davis and Daniel Drew have also earned full State contracts, after strong performances in West End Premier Cricket and Second XI cricket.

Bosisto moved to SA from Perth last season, and forced his way into the Marsh Sheffield Shield side with runs for Adelaide University Cricket Club and the State’s Second XI side.

Sturt captain Brad Davis has also been rewarded with his first contract after making his first-class debut towards the end of the 2018-19 season, and he amassed 738 runs at 73.80 from 13 Premier Cricket innings last year.

West Torrens captain and allrounder Daniel Drew returns to the State list as a fully contracted player, after a stint as a rookie in 2017-18.

Drew earns selection after forcing his way into the Shield side through weight of runs in the pathways, making his debut in SA’s drought-breaking win against Tasmania at Blundstone Arena in December.

“We feel as though we’ve added a fine group of young players who have already represented the State and country, and Daniel, Will and Brad have forced their way onto the list with consistent Premier Cricket and Second XI performances,” General Manager, High Performance Tim Nielsen said.

“We hope that a positive mix of experience and younger players will help us progress to playing more consistent cricket in the 2020-21 season.

“We thank Adam Zampa and Tom Andrews for their service to the State, and wish them well for the future.”

Alex Ross, John Dalton, Ben Pengelley, Patrick Page Jnr and Spencer Johnson were not offered contracts for the 2020-21 season.

Adam Zampa (New South Wales) and Tom Andrews (Tasmania) have moved States.

Full 2020-21 contract list: Wes Agar, Will Bosisto, Alex Carey, Tom Cooper, Brad Davis, Jacob Dickman (rookie), Daniel Drew, Callum Ferguson, David Grant, Travis Head, Henry Hunt, Corey Kelly (rookie), Thomas Kelly (rookie), Jake Lehmann, Conor McInerney, Joe Mennie, Harry Nielsen, Tim Oakley (rookie), Lloyd Pope, Kane Richardson, Luke Robins, Chadd Sayers, Liam Scott (rookie), Cameron Valente, Jake Weatherald, Nick Winter, Daniel Worrall.

Delisted: John Dalton, Patrick Page Jnr, Ben Pengelley, Spencer Johnson, Alex Ross

Good spin by the media team though.

Totally agree. Now, I don't want to be accused of being a "negative nancy" by Arch44, but this is four wooden spoons in a row coming up. The only positive out of this is surely Tim Nielsen gets the boot after being responsible for it all.

How can we not sign any players from interstate to top up our list, we have actually gone backwards yet again. Really hard to comprehend. At least we can blame too many teams in Grade cricket for the reason for another 12 months!

Don't mind the youngsters they've brought in but I'm surprised there's no "experienced" signing?

Depends on who the coach is and if he gets the support he needs

You'd think that we'd be an attractive place to play for, at least you'd get to bat twice every game.

So you have no confidence that the recommendations from the restructure working group will get up E2014?
Will it be because some clubs have held junior trials or the PCC to scared to make any change...........again

WA focusing on the shield I think. Expect NCN to play in the 50 over games still if not picked up by the Vics to cover Sids & Tremain.

Saw on fb last night Nick Bertus from NSW is moving to SA to join a grade club in an attempt to crack our shield side. Has played 4 games for NSW

https://www.espncricinfo.com/australia/ ... 71788.html

WA coach Adam Voges emphasised their focus to end their 21 year Sheffield Shield drought is their focus and cutting Coulter-Nile is part of the process apparently.
He quit red ball cricket last August due to his body not being able to handle it so WA cutting him now is fair enough.

In an article published yesterday NCN is indicated he is now eager to find a new state to play in the Marsh One Day Cup. He's obviously disappointed about being cut but I feel like he's having a fair sook about it. Not sure any state would look at him just to play one day cricket?

Eagles- I've had a look new 2020/21 state squads and in particular the players who are out from their respective states and I'm not sure there's much quality around the country that SA could potentially recruit that is not on a list already, still tied up with a state despite not being contacted or already moved to a different state for a fresh start?

Bigger fire pit more like it. Plenty of wood in those spoons to burn for days on end

Geezus, 21 years, I didn't realise it was that long.

That's almost Spudbacks territory.

With some of the national team selections coming out of there over the last few years - many of whom Justin Langer has described as a 'gun' - you'd think they'd been chalking up Shield trophies.

Hussey review has dropped. The search for a coach begins now apparently.

I wonder if the review findings will be made public? Or if it will be like the Crows one with a few palatable and non-specific dot points only made public with a quick mention that the board are doing a great job.

Hussey report released today.

Main point seems to be not letting Tim Neilson have any say in selections (he basically was running it). Good move!!

There's a lot in there that has been said before in reviews and press releases, what's actually missing is the want/ability to action a lot of it. Will be interesting to see who survives the review, they've made some terrible appointments of staff over the years.

I look forward to the next review in 5 years time, after another 5 bottom-2 finishes in the Shield.

Do other states have their GM of High Performance (or whatever Tim Nielsen's role is titled) on the selection panel?

Matter of trust: Kasprowicz quits Cricket Australia board as state anger festers

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/ ... ba9f90eb53

Former Test fast bowler Michael Kasprowicz has resigned from the Cricket Australia board after becoming frustrated with the direction of its leadership.

Kasprowicz contacted Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings on Wednesday afternoon to inform him of the decision.

It is understood Kasprowicz had become frustrated with the direction the board had taken in recent times and was particularly upset at the lack of trust between the board and its stakeholders.

The well-respected Kasprowicz decided to leave before his term was due to finish next year.

Kasprowicz’s resignation is significant as his experience in cricket administration covered a unique spectrum including stints as president of the players union (the ACA), interim chief executive of Queensland Cricket as well as his 38-Test career during Australia’s golden era.

His departure leaves the board without a male Test player. Mark Taylor resigned after becoming exhausted with dealing the players union though the board still has international cricket experience through the recently appointed former women’s star Mel Jones.

Kasprowicz confirmed his resignation on Wednesday but declined to elaborate on the reasons.

The board has been under fire in recent times due to its handling of the COVID crisis where it asked states to take a 25 per cent funding cut amid dire projections for Australian Cricket’s financial future. NSW and Queensland refused to accept the cuts and Queensland Chairman Chris Simpson last month spoke out at his body’s annual general meeting about his belief that the CA governance model was not working for the betterment of Australian cricket.

“The centralised model or the behemoth that CA has morphed into has consumed all aspects of cricket; assumed the role of the master of all matters cricket,’’ Simpson said.

“The states take offence to this – as we live and breath grassroots and the day to day running of cricket. The states have lost control of cricket. We are told from Jolimont St how to run cricket and we do not believe in many of these “systems and processes”.

The last paragraph particularly scathing that the States are just expected to fall into line and do what they say.

CA have had a fixation with participation numbers and TV ratings for too long, neglecting the game of cricket itself.
