Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait has announced his retirement from cricket at the age of 34. Tait called time on a 15-year career at the competitive level, with his last match coming for the Hobart Hurricanes against the Sydney Thunder in the 2016-17 Big Bash League.

Tait, whose last appearance for Australia came in a T20 international against India in Sydney early last year - after a call-up to international cricket after five years - played three Tests, 35 ODIs and 21 T20Is for Australia.

"I honestly wanted to play a couple more years, whether it was over in the UK or here," Tait told cricket.com.au. "I knew it was going to be difficult getting older to compete with the young blokes. I'm 34 years old and I suppose when you're not contributing on the field as much as you'd like to, it's time to finish up."

Thanks to Taity for the great career and his service to the Redbacks and country. I'll never forget his dominance at the 2007 World Cup.

So he won't play for Nairne at all?

Regardless, cricket was a better game with Taity's involvement, his glimpses of brilliance and sheer pace were as exciting to watch as a Gilchrist ton.

Yep, he was compelling viewing. Had some very memorable spells that made even the best stroke players jump and duck for cover.

Would think he's enjoying his new found fame as a batsman with them too much to give it away. Bowls very little for them. Hard to think he wouldn't still play for them as long as he's still around the place.

Moving to India I thought with his Indian wife.

No disrespect intended but I thought he had already retired, good solid career but wished his body had been more bulletproof to play more tests

Some great lightening spells but the heart in the end wasnt in it, could have been anything

His action killed him. Sending down thunderbolts with that action was never going to lead to durability. I would have hated to face him.

Absolutely, if the bowler has no idea where the ball is going, the batsman sure as f*** aint going to either.

In the end or the start his heart wasn't in it?

He gave up on 4 and 5 day cricket far too easily IMO.

The fact he played for 10 more years of the Mickey Mouse stuff means his body wasn't totally shot.

Bowling 24 balls every few days opposed 50+ balls per spell every few hours would take it's toll with the action.

Thommo probably didn't get the full use of his arsenal either, but he didn't have the shorter game to fall back on to preserve his body.

Back when Michael Slater referred to T20 every second minute as "the rock and roll version of the game" and reminded us constantly how it's "high octane and action every ball"

I often say to our OH&S officer at work "f***, you amaze me, how do you manage to fit 5 hours of work into 8?" it goes down a treat.

Thommo was severely restricted by that shoulder injury after he collided with Alan Turner in 1976. He was never as fearsome after that.
