Congrats Australia for winning the latest 'what the f*** is this comp called' trophy in cricket's heartland, Malaysia.

However, why TF are we keeping that waste of space Simon Cat Itch in at number one? Why are going back to this Tayloresque strategy with so many decent batsmen around the place? Why are we spending so much time waiting for this 21 runs off 66 ball plonker in the team when we have blokes like Hayden, Cosgrove, Ponting, Symonds, Hussey, Clarke, Gilchrist, Haddin, Watson available to us? Yes, all of those guys are better bats than Katich!! Cripes, throw in Boof, Birt, North, Maher as well.

All Katich, and to a lesser extent Martyn are doing is putting additonal pressure on the attacking players to up the ante. Yes, we won last night but I am convinced that including Katich and Martyn in the same side in the World Cup will end in disaster. This is not 1986, WE HAVE THE TALENT...now how about using it?? I'll bet Clarkey in particular was stoked about Katich snaffling all the balls to score naff all.

It's not even worth arguing over Katich. It has got beyond a joke to such an extent that surely only the highest level of Australian arrogance is the reason for him mainting his spot. The 'selection panel' - "we know he's shyte but will stick with the plan because we can't bare the thought of being wrong". Tossers.

I was excited when we were finally rid of T-Rev Hohns, and thought maybe we will now see some players get an opportunity to have a real crack at holding down the opening and number 4 spot. FWIW I think this should happen:

1. Martyn out. Hussey should be moved to number 4. He is currently wasted at 7.

2. Katich out - replaced by Hayden or Jaques. It is time for the selectors to make a decision now. Go with Jaques as the long-term prospect or go with Hayden for now and give Jaques more time.

3. Haddin to replace Martyn, bat at 7 and Gilchrist to open, play ODI's without having to worry about keeping wickets.

Batting line-up should be:

Gilchrist
Hayden/Jaques
Ponting
Hussey
Symonds
Clarke
Haddin
Watson
Lee
Bracken
McGrath

12th - Hogg - to play if conditions suit. Although, age may now be against him, especially since Symonds & Clarke have been bowling 5 or 6 each as the 5th bowler.

Gilchrist played 3-4 games in Sth Africa in 1997 and one on the ASHES tour that year, his batting was good but his fielding was shite (2 x 50s IIRC), hence the selctors moved to dump Healy from the one-day side as there is only one place Gilchrist can field and that is behind the stumps but they could see the potential in his batting with an eye on the 99 World Cup.

So whilst I can see where you are coming from but Gilchrist and Haddin will not play in the same side together......

Watson is better up top
Katich is not that bad, but there are better options
Hoggy does a great job and is stiff anytime he misses out.
Haddin would surely be close to the 2nd best keeper/batsmen in the world.

I agree with your statement on Katich. He can play, but he is more suited to the Test arena. He was probably more deserving of a recall to the Test side than Clarke, and probably Martyn, as Katich, like Martyn, got the rough end of the stick with some dubious LBW decisions.

Unfortunately, he has been given many opportunities in ODI's, and his slow starts have begun to hinder the team. Sometimes you do need blokes like him opening the innings, but if he is keeping players like Hayden & Jaques out it is time to move on.

Katich looks very good in light blue but he looks bloody shocking in the green and gold. The Poms will be praying we select him in the middle order for the Ashes.
