You have 5 guys over 30 that havent made their spot their own yet....at 30+
You have only 1 guy that seriously deserves his spot as a batsman(Clarke)
You have 1 guy that can bowl but cant stay fit(Harris)
You have 3 relatively untried(test level) players (Cummins, Faulkner, Maxwell)
You have 2 bowlers that work exceptionally hard but really dont take that many wickets
Then you have 8 guys that are ok at shield level filling in the gaps around the other 12???

Australian cricket is in fantastic shape.

Mind you this is relating to test matches not T20 or ODi

I'd have Jackson Bird in there for Patrick Cummins, consistency over raw talent at this point in time. Maxwell can p!ss off, Henriques or Smith for him.

Or Adam Voges and maybe Stephen O'Keefe.

True to form these selections are also awful!!!

Personally

MAXWELL FFS!!!!

DOHERTY FFS!!!!! I would rather see a young spinner get a contract and shiteloads of time and effort put into them. Or at very least Sean O'Keefe.

Steve Smith should be batting at number 5 or 6 in the first Ashes test yet cant get a contract despite also being part of the ODI and T20 sides.

Surely there is only room for one of Hilfenhaus and Harris, personally i would have had Harris provided he looks ready to be part of our Ashes campaign.

I can handle Haddin getting a contract but surely we need to be starting to look at our up and coming keepers which we seem to have a bit of depth in.

Siddle FFS...................................................nah only jokes.

Steve Smith was dropped from the ODI side, two days later was announced in the Test squad. He made two scores in India and now he should have a contract? He won't even get a game in England, I hope he does though because they will expose him and hopefully, finally, we see the back of him for good.

LOL your back now, you went very very very quiet once he started batting in India.

Off course England will expose him, just like you said he wouldnt hit a run in India LOL.

Personally anyone who is in the test side/squad should get a contract imho. No wonder by blokes dont care for test cricket when they can get a contract just playing T20 or ODI's.

Not being on the list doesn't mean you are not going to be playing for Australia in the near future.

agree but being on the list does set you up financially and means you can concerntrate on test cricket rather thanhaving no other option than chasing bucks on the t20 circuit.

Find it staggering Maxwell can get one before Smith and Khawaja who are probably borderline anyway.
Must admit I don't know how they work out these contracts, if you're on the list is it a full contract?
Perhaps they could open it up to 50 spots - 15 test, 20 one-day and 15 20-20 spots.
A player could be granted one, two or three parts to their contract depending on where the selectors see them fitting into which sides.
There'd be more one day spots given they cross over both tests and 20-20, for instance Clarke would get a test and one-day spot, whilst Maxwell and Doherty might get a one-dayer and 20-20.
Obviously the base for a test contract would be in excess of the one-dayer which in turn would be more than 20-20.

I don't have a clue how it works but to me that seems like the most logical and simplest idea. Great idea

Glad it made sense, I was starting to confuse myself :)

On the contracts, recall it mentioned that part of the Argus report's recommendations was not to reward players on potential, before they'd reached the level of top performance. During the week it was mentioned Starc's new contract is $1m. I'm a big wrap for him, but he's still developing and not at that level yet. Surely that's the contract he should be getting in 2 years time at 25-26?

I think the reason Starc (and someone like Watson) are getting huge contracts is because they do weight it like you mentioned a few posts above and give those who are part of each format more money.

Can't argue too much with the contract handouts this year. Interesting they have Hilfenhaus still - perhaps a pointer that they will include him instead of Bird on The Ashes tour.

The Poms will be laughing at Hilfy over Bird. Another bloke who won't get wickets over there. Not many tricks in the bag. We've already got a heart bowler without many tricks so including two in the same attack equals England 3/400. At least we've got Maxwell game on.

REB

Yeah, you're right Aerie. Still reckon it is a contract "too early" for him.
