No surprises there. If Australia can hold india to a draw in the first 2 tests, then they could pinch a series win when the series moves to the friendlier pitches in the north.

First test in chennai. I expect Australia to play 2 spinners.

Warner / Watson
Cowan
Hughes
Clarke
Khawaja
Henriques
Wade
Johnson
Siddle
Lyon
Doherty

Not the team I would pick, but thats what I think the selectors will do.

The Indians must be shaking in their boots at the prospect of taking on that squad

Can anyone tell me why we need to take 17 players?

Not happy with it but thats the side they'll pick IMO.

Maxwell or Henriques will play IMO to add more flexibility to the bowling attack. I'm assuming Watson isn't bowling? i would much rather us play Doherty, Lyon and Henriques instead of Lyon, Maxwell and one of the quicks. Maxwell is a serious spud. Smith, well he isn't in the best form, but his record is above most others in domestic cricket with the bat.

EDIT: Watson was named as a top 4 batsman so he will bat 4 and clarke 5. Forgot about Pattinson and he is definitely in

Dont think he will be fit for the first test, another injury around the corner IMO.

Is he good enough to play just as a batsman?

Steven Smith is the most promising Australian spinner since Shane Warne emerged - but he is more than that. He carries the extra advantage of being an outstanding batsman who could soon slot in to the top six for his country, whether he bowls or not. By the age of 21 he was in Australia's Test, one-day and Twenty20 teams, picked on promise and quickly showing the composure of a seasoned professional. There were words of caution about his early elevation, but there was no hiding the excitement about a player who gives the ball air, hits it hard, catches it at will and seems unbothered by pressure.
