Media reports that Ricky is set to announce his retirement in Perth this afternoon.

One of the greatest cricketers I have ever seen.

It is currently sad to see him getting dismissed the way he is and he has probably gone on a year or so too long, but what's not to say he hasn't enjoyed playing the last couple of years without the pressures of captaincy.

I still remember his debut like it was yesterday, was probably the first cricketer that I actually use to get excited about watching field on tv, I will always remember those couple of summers where he just didn't miss the stumps!!!!!

His innings against India in the WC final was a master piece!

If true all the best Ricky in whatever you decide to do in life after cricket.

yeah he will retire after this test in perth.

Ricky Ponting, Australia’s 366th Test player and most successful captain, has announced he will retire from Test cricket at the conclusion of the third Vodafone Test in Perth.
Cricket Australia today congratulated Ricky Ponting on a stellar cricketing career, describing him as simply one of the best ever to pad up for his country.

Ponting, Australia’s 366th Test player and 42nd Test captain, announced earlier today that the Vodafone Perth Test v South Africa starting tomorrow will be his last.

It will be his 168th Test for Australia, equalling Steve Waugh’s record as most Tests played by an Australian.

Sad to see him go but it is time.

This opens the door for a few players now. Khwaja is probably next in line and might get first crack against the sri lankans.

A few people on the cricket show thought Phil Hughes was pretty close to batting at 3 for Aus at the GABBA had he out scored Quiney in the tour match.

Will be interesting to see what they do, will there be a shuffle and then look for a number 6 .

Slater said on 5aa Taylor felt Punter was going to retire after this test. By looking at his last dismissal you can tell he made up his mind then. Like Martyn when he got out at Adelaide during the Ashes.

Although Martyn had an alleged incident after the test that probably nailed that coffin shut.....

Champion. A good time for him to retire as far as the team is concerned. A new batsman gets a chance against Sri Lanka on home soil before the upcoming Ashes series.

He's been the best Australian batsman I've seen. So reliable and attacking from number 3. Only downside is his Ashes losses, but he has guided Australia through a tough period post some of the best players the cricket world has seen.

As a player he stands amongst the greats of the game.

At least Craddock and Conn can find something else to write about hopefully something positive!

Hughes at 3
Clarke at 4 and
Watson at 5

Has always challenge for players in ss to push him out. Would expect khawaja or a Hughes to replace punter. It could opener with Hughes move Cowan to 3 or Hughes come in at 3. Khawaja comes in anywhere from 3 to 6.
