Aus vs SAF Series

Postby whufc » Thu Oct 18, 2012 1:27 pm

WOW what a series this shapes up to be, the Aussies generally match up very well against the Saffers and with a new look Aussie side this is set to be a cracker.

Who will open the batting for Aus, personally i would like to see Warner and Hughes, i dont mind Cowan but find he gets bogged down far to often which puts added pressure on Warner, at least if Hughes bats time he generally scores quickly (even if it is from edges through the slips for four)

Will the Aussies go with the 4 paceman or include the spinner, is Lyon the automatic selection.

At this real early stage this is my 11

1. D.Warner
2. P.Hughes
3. S.Watson
4. R.Ponting
5. M.Clarke
6.?????????
7. M.Wade
8. J.Pattinson
9. P.Cummins
10. M.Starc
11. N.Lyon

No Hilf or Siddle? just about our two best players last summer

Has our pace bowling depth ever been this good before? Hilf, Siddle, Cummins, Strac, Pattinson, Harris when fit & that other young kid from NSW
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

6. M. Hussey
7. Wade
8. Siddle
9. Cummins/Pattinson
10. Hilfenhaus
11. Lyon

That'd be my lineup at this stage. Pattinson or Cummins would be pretty unlucky to miss out IMO. Where are the young batsmen domestically, knocking down the door?

Potentially good - none of those have really had more than 1 good year at International level so far...

At this stage you would easily take McGrath, Gillespie, Lee, Fleming, Kasprowicz and Bichel circa 2000 ahead of them.

Warner
Cowan
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Siddle
Haddin (sigh)
Starc
Pattinson
Hilfenhaus

With Lyon likely to be dropped from the Redbacks side there is no way that he will be playing Australia. You don't even need a spinner anyway. Pace is our strength so why not utilise it. I can't remember seeing the West Indies employing a spinner very often.

Siddle to bat higher than Haddin is deadly serious. Siddle shows heart while Haddin is a chump. Selectors have made is clear they want him back. Clarkes bum buddy.

Siddle picked for consistency. Pattinson for agression. Hilfenhaus for swing. Starc for left arm swing.

Couldn't think of anyone to replace Cowan with. I would say Hughes but after seeing his SS dismisals I doubt the selectors would be taking the risk.

Having listened to the words from Clarke and Inverarity, Siddle and Hilf will play. With that being said:

1. David Warner (100%)
2. Shane Watson (100%)
3. Ricky Ponting (100%)
4. Michael Clarke (100%)
5. Michael Hussey (100%)
6. David Hussey (50%)
7. Matthew Wade (75%)
8. Peter Siddle (100%)
9. James Pattinson (75%)
10. Ben Hilfenhaus (100%)
11. Patrick Cummins (50%)

I think Starc will likely play over Cummins, although I am not a fan of it. If Watto does not open, then Cowan probably plays, and everyone shuffles down one, except that young debutant, who goes back to the Shield...

That's a good point, McGrath is twice as good as anyone we have now too but on potential this is a quality line up in the future. Could even throw M Johnson in the mix as well if we are getting desperate.

If they play 4 quicks Starc will play due to being a left hand bowler but do we need 4 quicks plus Watson in the team? I would play Lyon at the Gabba but 4 quicks maybe at the WACA.

1. Warner
2. Cowan
3. Watson
4. Ponting
5. Clarke
6. M Hussey
7. Wade
8. Siddle
9. Pattinson
10.Hilfenhaus
11. Lyon
12th Starc

I reckon it's all over for Haddin and that the Cowan/Warner partnership will remain. Hughes feeds catches to the slips and the gully so won't play against the Saffers' pace attack on our bouncy decks. I think they'll pick Lyon for Brisbane for the variation and use Watson as the fourth seamer which means he will not open the batting. If Lyon does miss due to the conditions then I reckon Starc is the fourth seamer.

Why would you leave out Siddle who has a hat trick to his name at the Gabba and Hilf who hits the seam more than most? Add to that you've selected Hughes who is a walking wicket once the ball gets between his hips and his neck.
