SA v QLD - Sheffield Shield @ Adelaide Oval 23/10-26/10

I suppose it's too early for the squads to be named, but I assume Klinger is a walk-up start now he's over his shoulder issues. I wouldn't mind the 'Backs giving Worrall a go, as he impressed me for the most part with the ball in the Ryobi Cup match on Sunday.

And more importantly, why is Peter George so far back in the queue? His first-class bowling average (31.06) is pretty respectable, and he hit some form in the first dig of the current Futures League game. But who would he replace, Sayers or Putland?

I think I may check out a few days of the action, and give the boys a bit of support. They sure as hell need it.

Would have thought there are some lads under pressure.

Most of the blokes that have played the opening games and not involved with game last Sunday are playing at Prospect this week.

Miller not overly successful so could be under a bit of pressure. Especially if his opening partner backs up his first innings score with a bigger one.

Travis Head needs to follow up with another decent score as well.

I didnt think SA cricket could be in any more trouble.....but nobody apart from hughes and klinger look like making runs, which at the moment is the biggest problem....

2 Spinners is the worry......cant drop botha as he "captains" the side, and Lyon needs as many games into him as possible in preparation for the Australian Summer so we are stuck with the both of them.

My predicted side:

Hughes
Klinger
Cooper
Ferguson
Head
Christian
Ludeman
Botha
Sayers
Lyon
Putland / George

Agreed, but I think it's a matter of blokes not beating the door down with form worthy of usurping them. The current line-up isn't faring much better though.

Miller for mine would have to make way for Klinger, no question. On paper, a Klinger-Hughes opening combo sunds good, although they haven't backed it up on the park. The middle order really bothers me, although the alternative isn't much better. This is where Christian and Botha need to really step up, as it's a long tail from there.

3 quicks/2 spinners on this deck is the way to go, if it plays anything like it did in the Ryobi Cup game. I'm not sold on the last Shield game's attack though. As mentioned previously, George would have to come in, no question, but for who? Worrall should be around the mark too.

Valleys07 has it pretty much spot on.

Our 2 spinners arent taking wickets FC.....Yeah adelaide oval might suit that over a 4 quick/1 spin combo.....but its useless when none of our spinners are lethal.

Lyon's stats in the 2 games: 2/225 @ 112.5- best of 1/45
Botha's stats in the 1 game: 1/63 (missed the first one with T20 committments)

Sayers and Putland have 6 and 7 wickets respectively.

Reasonable call, Valleys07. I do hope they give Lyon a further run to press his claims for a Test spot though. It wouldn't be so much of a problem if Botha could make a few runs either. I have heard around the place that he can bat a bit, although I haven't seen him do anything.

The fast bowling conundrum in itself is a positive, as we are having blokes compete for spots. Add to that, when Mennie comes back from the circus, would he be a shoe-in for a spot?

For team balance we don't need 2 spinners. Could we drop Lyon for George? I'd rather play Lyon as the spinner then Botha but the captain isn't gonna be dropped...

We could, but I'd be reluctant. We really need them both. In a perfect world, I'd send Botha packing, and hand the reins back to Klinger.

FC- Will be interesting to see what the selectors do when mennie comes back. They will have George, Mennie, Sayers, Putland, Worrall competing for 2 spots......healthy i agree! hopefully that translates into some wicket taking!

Test- Spot on, but facts are that the ACB will push for lyon to be playing- so we will play 2 spinners up until the 1st test.

I wonder why SA Pursued Botha instead of a steve smith, but no use crying over spilt milk!

Miller got a first ball duck today in futures league, id say he is gone. Putland wont be dropped. He is SA best bowler. George in for Sayers may be the only change, but Chuck loves Chadd so maybe not. Id be concerned we only got 3 wickets last game and one was a run out.

I agree with that, maybe instead of pursuing Botha (or Smith), I would've thought recruiting a first-choice fast bowler would've been the go. But obviously, having never played the game at a decent level, I hardly seem qualified to make that judgement.

Anyways, I look foward to Tuesday. I might even bring my camera and take a few snaps.

Not going to happen but i wouldnt mind seeing a side like this

1.P.Hughes
2. M.Klinger
3. T.Head
4. T.Cooper
5. D.Christian
6. C.Ferguson
7. T.Ludeman
8. J.Botha
9. G.Putland / J.Mennie
10. N.Lyon
11. P.George

I dont agree with the two spinner but SACA has stuffed up again and we are stuck with it. Botha is captain so he WILL play, Lyon is the national spinner, if his not playing first class cricket leading into the first test Cricket Australia will get him on the next flight to NSW quicker than you can so Baggy Blue

but those stats mean nothing - how many wickets have the pacemen taken at adelaide oval this season? 1 between christian, putland and sayers who can say if playing another paceman instead of botha or lyon whould do anygood?

Those stats weren't specific to Adelaide Oval MZ, facts are our spinners are not a threat both at home or away- what i was trying to highlight is 2 spinners at adelaide is only effective if they are both wicket takers and are creating chances.....

so you would replace one of them with a pace bowler who is ineffective and not creating chances?

It wouldnt happen anyway, so it doesnt matter what i think...

My argument is based upon: I stated in a previous post, i can't understand why SA pursued Botha over say a steve smith. If we had smith in the side for example- we could fit him as a batsman at the expense of someone that isnt scoring runs, end up with 2 spinners still and allow us to play 3 genuine quicks (choose from putland, george, mennie, sayers, worrall) and 4 genuine bowlers (add lyon into the aforementioned) and 6 bowling options (with christian and smith as part time options), giving us a bit more variety.

Its irrelivent anyway as our batting lineup couldnt put us in a winning position to start with!

Should only play one spinner but thanks to the morons at SACA we are stuck with a Captain who has to play aswell as the current Australian test spinner
