37-year old Vangipurappu Venkata Sai Laxman, known as VVS, or after his epic 281 against Australia simply Very Very Special, has announced his immediate retirement from all forms of international cricket, ending a 16-year international career.
VVS played 134 Tests, scoring 8781 runs, 17 Test centuries
Despite the odd "good series" here and there, and despite his natural talents, he did not have a lengthy ODI career, playing just 86 matches, 2338 runs at 30.76. with 6 ODI hundreds.
He did not play a T20i.

A wonderful player and his amazing innings in that famous test in India shouldn't have been a surprise to those who had seen him make 180 in an otherwise limp Indian batting performance in Sydney on their previous tour out here.
In reality he probably wasn't the most consistent but always seemed to score runs when the chips were down in what was a fantastic career.

That innings @ Eden Gardens was the greatest innings I have ever seen from any batsman in any game. Was done against one of the all time greatest sides, staring @ a series defeat and was picking off the most balanced bowling attack in the history of the game (2 world class quicks @ the peak of their careers, Shane Warne) and in the end won the series.

Anyone got his stats against good sides.I Always thought he made good runs against good sides. Super player, the Mark Waugh of Indian Cricket.

Vs Australia, the best side during most of his career:
29 matches, 2434 runs at 49.67, six hundreds, 12 fifties
Only better against West Indies 1715 at 57.16 and New Zealand 818 at 58.42

Only averages 39 against Bangaldesh, 40 against Zimbabwe (one hundred and one fifty between the two).

Outside of Asia 4676 runs at 49.74 runs, his good places were West Indies (47.75) and Australia (44.14).

Admittedly the most interesting statistic I found is that in drawn matches (he played in 46 of them), Laxman averaged 62.59, with eight of his hundreds in those games.
