Simon Katich retires from First Class Cricket in Australia
Simon Katich wishes to advise that he has decided to retire from First Class Cricket in Australia. Simon is currently enjoying playing with Hampshire in the English county season and is committed to play for the Perth Scorchers in the Champions League Twenty20 in October.
The WACA and Cricket NSW have provided wonderful cricketing environments and amazing opportunities for Simon to play under great coaches, with terrific players and surrounded by dedicated support staff. He wishes to thank them all for the camaraderie and support over the last 16 years and for the chance to play in winning teams.
With a young family and a desire for an extended time at home, Simon has decided it is time to reassess his priorities.
Simon is currently playing in England and is unavailable for comment.

I am glad you could be man enough to acknowledge the contribution of Katich to Australian cricket over the years like this, despite your dislike of the way the man went about his game.
Very gracious of you.

Sad day for Aussie cricket. Not many old school cricketers left.

Definitely could not be called a cricketer that was "world class" in terms of talent, but those fighting qualities, that most would consider distinctly Australian, and often associate with Steve Waugh, courageous, determined, hard-nosed and enduring, are definitely Katich traits, and he is not easily replaceable, that is for sure.
Hit 196 earlier in the County season, and could well finish with 20K First Class runs by the end of his county stint.
Congrats Katich on a truly inspiring career.

Sad to see the end of Kat, well and truly shafted by CA.
Really admired the bloke, had that real gritty, dour streak about him that a lot of the new breed dont.
Sad to see him finish the way he did.

Disappionting to read he has decided to retire, I really admired him, love the fact he wasn't afraid to speak his mind, he was a real fighter and had he ability to bat anywhere in the top 6. As Jim said was well and truely shafted by CA.

A test average of 45 as an opener is pretty much world class isnt it?

Would've been a fair bit higher in his 2nd stint I'd imagine.

To be fair, Greenidge, Gambhir, Hayes, Langer and Slater are all around that mark.
Personally I think world class:
Hayden 50.73
Hobbs 56.94

Pretty sure he averaged 50 as an opener. His days as a middle order player weren't so good bringing the overall average down a touch.

Are you suggesting Greenidge and Haynes weren't world class?
Relying on averages to judge a cricketer is not a good idea.

Are you trying to sink your statement or support it with these stats?

He copped a lot of shit and I'm not too sure why. He was scoring runs when many others weren't and got thrown aside for Phillip 'no technique' Hughes. Born a few years to early the poor bloke. Always had a crack and led us to a Shield. Go the Kat...oh yeah, he has.

REB

He probably had one of the best eyes to play the sport, it was very cringeworthy the way how he walked across in front of his stumps and got away with it.

Trott, Lehmann, Chanderpaul all say hello (all three have the Kat covered though).
