Great news for those in Canberra, terrific that the game is sending international matches to all states/territories when possible.

Canberra Centenary to host Australia for first ever International

Cricket Australia (CA) and the ACT Government today announced the Australian Cricket Team will play its first ever International match in Canberra in 2013.

CA Chief Executive Officer, James Sutherland, welcomed the support of the ACT Government in securing the match to be played at Manuka Oval as part of the 2012-13 Commonwealth Bank One-Day International Series.

“This is an historic moment for cricket in nation’s capital and a great way to help celebrate the Centenary of Canberra,” Mr Sutherland said.

“Canberra continues to play an important role in Australian cricket producing some of our best national players and hosting the annual Prime Minister’s XI match.

“The ACT Government’s commitment to upgrading Manuka Oval will not only help to position it to host future international and domestic cricket matches, including matches in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, but it will also help grow the game of cricket in Canberra and surrounding areas which is critical to our vision for cricket to be Australia’s favourite sport.

“I congratulate Minister Barr and the ACT Government for their enthusiasm and support of this match. Minister Barr, in particular, has been a strong advocate for cricket in the ACT and helping to bring the Australian cricket team to Canberra.” Mr Sutherland said.

BTW Smaccer, When are CA going to up hold up their end of the agreement with the NT Government to hold test and one day games in Darwin?? Was supposed to be three tests in five years commencing in 2003. Only held two tests...

NEXT year's winter cricket Test between Australia and Bangladesh in Cairns has been postponed - again.

Cricket Australia general manager Michael Brown yesterday confirmed the 2010 Northern Series,
including the Cairns Test, would not go ahead.
It is the second time a Test match between the two nations, slated for Cairns’ Cazalys, has been nudged from the international schedule following the cancellation of the 2008 series against Bangladesh.

Brown said the world economic climate, combined with the costs associated with staging an international match in a regional centre, were the primary reasons behind postponing the series, which was also to include a Darwin Test.

"The Northern Series is fantastic for the local community, but it comes with huge costs," he said.

"In the current climate, we feel we have to be prudent and, like any business, we need to be careful and so the Test has been postponed to a date yet to be decided."

Brown hoped the costs to Cricket Australia and its commercial partners would not prove as prohibitive in the future.

"We’d really like to get back to Cairns," he said.
