Shield Season to start in August?

Postby Jim05 » Sun Jan 15, 2012 3:27 pm

Saw an article on FoxSports today saying that CA is looking at moving the Shield season to August to allow the expansion of the BBL in the summer months. Some suggested ideas involved the season running from August with the last round and Final to take place early December that way the BBL can go longer.
Queensland would play matches at Cairns so the Lions have the GABBA over winter but other regional grounds are being suggested as shield venues.
Pretty angry if this goes through as it will mean once the shield season finishes in early December there is no chance for guys to push for a test spot or guys to come back and get form.
Looks like T20 could signal the death of Shield cricket

Too much of a logistical nightmare to do it surely, as many of the regional grounds mooted unlikely to be available due to winter sports. Also, can see the first couple of matches being washed out.

With all the money the ACB are supposedly gonna make out of this circus, perhaps they could build their own under cover stadium and play the T2o rubbish in Winter and take on the AFL wankers and leave the traditional Sheild program where it is.

Wont it be great.

Young up and comer plays a couple of Shield games in August and makes runs, pushing for Test selection, then from December to February he plays T20 shit against Geelong and the Gold Coast to stay in touch.

Too many SS matches and Test Matches NOV-DEC
The 20/20 cricketers have no lead up games b4 the season starts late December
The BIG crowds that are attending 20/20 have to wait for about 2 months to see a 20/20 game
Simply not good enough

Agreed, lets program more T20 domestic games, lets oversatuate the market, to the detriment of the shield.

I wonder if any of the ACB current board members were around when the fascination with 50 over cricket took off in the early 80s? 15 game triangular series followed by a 5 games finals series. Eventually got wound back to 12 game triangular series and best of three final series and even that got boring and lots its appeal 20 years later (mid 00s).

Haven't watched any cricket live this summer, would've LOVED to have gone and watched a shield game in late Dec, early Jan.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Great to see the players think that this idea is a joke, saying that the BBL has gone for too long and should be condendensed with double headers and less time between games
